my first 500
« on: September 09, 2011, 11:11:58 AM »
Its a very low hour 2003, i bought it off a member here. I've been lurking on this site for a while and saw it in the classifieds. Guy is a great guy to deal with and is a wealth of knowledge. I've had a few dirtbikes but nothing like this. I took it for a little ride today and the power is amazing. Here's a couple pics of the bike and one of my shin. I can assure you it hurts much worse than it looks.

Welcome to the site J.S.,
The bike looks to be in great shape, sorry you got bit... I don't remember hitting my shin like that.
Once you get the personality of the bike down it should be three or four cold and one kick hot..
I do start the bike tied down in the truck to warm it up, usually.   It makes it easier to stand on a bucket and jump down on that kicker.  Un load and then  warm she lights up realatively easy..
Glad to have you with us,

This one starts on the second kick cold, the hot start is what got me. I drove it to my neighbors and s**t the fuel off while i talked to him. Forgot to turn it back on when i left so it stalled out on the way home. I was on the side of a small hill and there was no way for me to comfortably start it. I like your idea of starting it tied down, i'll definitely give it a shot.

Toby, yes its a 69 rokon with the uber rare peanut tank. I decided to put it up for sale toafter i bought the 500 to keep the toys to fiance ratio happy. I love it and its a lot more sensible for me to have than the 500 but i'm at the age that if i didn't get the 500 soon i'd never get one.

I like to put my 500 in second gear,  rock it back and forth to "tickle" it,  get the piston as close ta top as I can,  then kick in a backwords stroke and avoid a down motion.
Looks like that shin hurts.

Welcome to the kx club that is the tops.

What you said is very funny. After i banged my shin and the pain went away (about 5 mins), i put the kicker at different spots and kicked it over slow. I found that kicking it back was the easiest for me and seemed like it would save my shin from mass destruction. By the way, did i mention that i love this bike?

Welcome to the forum !

Here's our first free tip:

NEVER attempt to start a KX500 with anything on your feet other than quality MX boots ! You will end up with an extremly painfull footpeg rash on your right calf. (sililar to exactly what your leg looks like ! )    :-o

Please do not post that you attempted to start a KX500 wearing wet flip-flops.... you will be subject to getting an internet beat-down with a stupid bat...  LOL  :-D

the bike aint truly yours till it bites you. as for starting, i get it to tdc, then bring kicker up to 10 o clock and kick down, making sure not to lock knee as you kick.if she kicks back you dont get pitched or a bust ankle.after I'd worked this out, I noticed andre malherbe doing it in a video from namur 86! enjoy the madness, dont make em like they used to etc etc.K.
And lo, I did loft the front wheel and carried it forth to the unbelievers, and cast it down before them and said unto them ''look now upon the might of my throttle control ye pitiful cretinous ones''
And the unbelievers did quake in their boots....
