2000 KX500 - New to me.
« on: August 13, 2011, 04:35:38 AM »
Bought in this condition.

After a bit of wrenching.

I picked up a 2000 KX500. You should see the roost that comes off this thing. 5th gear wheelies. Retarded. 1st day out I was pulling a 3rd gear wheelie on the beach. Had her straight up just as I shifted into 4th. It started to come over. I went to tap the rear brake and missed the pedal. Eject! Eject! Houston, we have a problem.  At that point, it was time to just push it away. Well, let's just say, I've never had a charlie horse that bad in my life! I tried but couldn't get up.  A minute later I was up but dealt with a sore right cheek for the rest of the trip.  Let me tell you the sand right at the ocean water is as hard as concrete.  :-D

The 250 fender is sick I just installed it in my 93 500. And my ride is exact opposite when I purchased it it was stickered all over and it looked like s**t, so I replaced the plastics but not te tank as it is a oversized ims, I cleaned it up with a plastic renew kit but it does not match the new plastic as it's faded. I took my 500 for a spin down my back alley and it has the same powers as yours when I rolled the throttle the from tire lifted in 3rd gear but I slowed down as I was on asphalt and did not want to ruin it the first ride. Look good tho

Hey Camo,
Sorry to hear about the ejection, but sounds like you'll be o.k.
That is quite a transformation on your bike, looks good.
Did you do any motor work or had the engine  been built by the previous owner.
I guess with that rear tire a good stock tune would be a ripper!  There are plenty of dune guys who would like to have that tire combo.
Take care & welcome to the K-5 club!

The previous owner had just installed a new top end with no time on it. You could tell it was true bu the wrench marks and gaskets.

Thanks guys!

I had a similar ejection last fall.  When I hit the ground the weight of my boot hyper extended my knee.  It hasnt been the same since...

That is a sick looking bike. Nice find. I wish I was closer to the dunes. What brand/model are those tires? I may have to get some and drive 3.5 hours to Silver lake
It's hard to keep a drivers license riding a 2 stroke dirt bike on the street.  If you drive within the law they are VERY boring.

I love the dunes...

So my nephew was riding the K5 last night. Phoned me. He was riding our trails with my kids and stalled it in 2nd gear. Went to restart it... he can kick it over by hand. :( Pushed it about 2 miles home. I'm not there and can't check it out yet.

Never take a stock jetted K5 too far without a spare new sparkplug ! Especially low speed play riding in the woods.... sounds like your nephew simply fouled a plug.

Dang...Sorry to hear that Camo.
If you had it down at the beach, and the nephew was riding in the woods You would think it was Plenty rich or overly so
Like Polar said.
So smoking the engine without rejetting the bike doesn't sound right... Broken ring is what would be my first stab with the info available.   Hopefully there was no damage to the cyl.
Heck, I had a friend bring me a chainsaw that lost all compression and wouldn't start.  He just knew he had to get a whole new top end... I took the cover off the saw, cleaned the threads on the sparkplug, installed it and she was good to go.  So Stranger things have happened, let's hope the plug is loose !  :|

I'm at work and haven't looked at it. He said he can kick it over by hand. It tells me there's no compression. Maybe the pug fell out. lol A fouled plug will still be hard to kick over. This is not. It was a brand new plug. It was jetted for sea level and ran great. We live at 2500 feet. It still runs crisp but I left it that way for him.

I guess my Dad came over and had a look. He took the plug out and put his finger over the hole, kicked it over and no compression. I'm wondering if it over heated and melted the rings into the pistons.

I feel bad for you dude, you got fu@ked.  After reading this post, and then your post about now "no compression" , the only reason a seller replaces the top end and then immediately sells the bike is because the cylinder and or crank is blown, and the seller just want's out quick and cheap.....
