 Close call indeed!
  I have a DID 520 x-ring.  I think it was around $110.00 plus a few masterlinks.
There are a few chains in the Product review section that might be of some help.

Well yo made out better than me, I brake my case, chain, and front sprocket. Probably would've broke my big toe as well if I wasn't wearing my gear.

Consider yourself EXTREMLY lucky ! When a chain snaps, it almost always takes a chunk of the crankcase with it. I'm also going to internet b!tch slap u as that chain has rust all over it telling me your not lubing your chain. Dude, take this lesson learned.

It's imperative to run a premium o-ring chain when you have a 60 hp 500cc 2 stroke. I have had excellent results running the Regina ORN6 chain !  Hands down my chain of choice, extremly tough chain !

I've always used sidewinder chain and sprockets on all 3 of my KX500s and never had a problem ever even with running them at the dunes just about every weekend for 3 years on the 01 K5 and the chain and sprockets were still in suberb condition.

I went with the smart chain 2 and titanium sprockets and if you do order one tell them you are from kxriders I do that everytime I order something and let people know that there are plenty of us (power in numbers) you would be surprised at how helpful people are when they know there are a bunch of us nuts and we're ready to spend lol.

http://sidewindersprockets.com/

10,000lb 520 smart chain and I order 120 links with 14/49 sprockets so I have a few extra links and I went with a master link setup and ordered a couple extras but if you get this chain remember to pull the chain back if you ride dunes so your paddle will fit because these chains don't stretch well they do but my 01 K5 the chain stretched 3/8-1/2" in 3 years so put it where you want it and leave room for a paddle :)

See how far back I put mine that's because it's not going to budge forever lol and I need the tire back for a paddle in another month I'm off to the dunes.

The smart chain is nickel plated it looks pretty good IMO

Just an old guy that enjoys going fast, I was in the army for 6 years and bought my first K5 when I returned from basic training. I raced a yz60 from age 6 to 8  a kx80 from 8 to 12  a kx125 from 12-17 intermediate class on k5 which I've owned 3.

I'm pretty sure Sidewinder chains are actually a  Regina ORN6 just rebadged...  8-)

if so, good call, adjust it once after about 5 hours, and that will be the last adj that chain will ever need !

The owner of sidewinder is friends with my biological father he's a pilot for southwest airlines I found this out when ordering the chain a few weeks ago that the owner of sidewinder took lessons from my father (he's an instructor) and when I told the sales guy on the phone my last name he ask me if that was my father then we had a long long converstation about the process they go through to make their chains.

(for the record I have used their products for over 25 years and have no affiliation with them I just found out that the owner took flying lessons from my father a few weeks ago) I had to be clear on that

I haven't spoken to my biological father in 20 years but had a great talk with the sidewinder owner and he assured me that they aren't rebadged regina chains :)

Polar bus you didn't strike me as the kind of guy that would make a claim like that without some proof but life never stops surprising me, but I assume you were joking to razz me for spending that much loot :) it's hard to tell what people mean on the internet but the guys at sidewinder were real good to deal with but expensive.

I guess he could be lying to me :)

Ok I read my post again and hope I didn't come accross sounding nasty it wasn't meant that way :) but for the money I put out nobody wants to hear that they bought a repackaged regina chain ya know what I mean :)

  Hey Johnny 5,
Here's a brief write up about tensile strength by Krause himself (Mr. Know it all).
