Just a question...
« on: May 26, 2011, 09:00:32 AM »
Looking thru ads for 2 strokers I'm amazed that everyone selling them has put a new top end in the bike minutes before writing the ad :-D Man what a great world we are living in!

"Excellent condition, brand new top end with 0 time on it" is my favorite. Yeah I always put a new top end in, don't even start it and just put it right on craigslist lol! Or the "brand new bottom and top end" Sometimes I'd rather have it blown up than "Fixed" by the guy who pounds the cases on the crank with a mallet in his back yard :?

In 2004 I bought an 03 KX65 that had a 'new bottom end' in it.  Less than 5 minutes into my boy's first ride, you guessed it........... the bottom end seized.

I have purchased hundreds of bikes over the years.
Once in a while they have a new piston and rings.
Once in a greater while they have a fairly new sleeve with a matching piston.
Only twice in hundreds of purchases have I ever seen a new plate job with the exception being some cylinders that had been re-plated as part of a collection I bought out.
As you probably have already guessed, a lot of these bikes were suppose to have a new top end.
I have to admit, most of these guys are convinced or sound convinced that they really do have a new top end.
One guy I bought from had about 1500 in receipts for his complete engine overhaul (top and bottom end).
It was done a month previous to our purchase and was suppose to have about an hours worth of riding.
When we pulled the engine apart we found the piston was heavily galled due to excessive side play in the crank.
It appeared as though there were some new seals installed along with a new piston and rings.
The cylinder appeared to be the stock plating that had been ball honed.
The guy who I bought the bike from actually called me back a few weeks later to see how I liked the condition of the engine.
When I told him what I found he said "No way!"
He drove over and I showed him.
He was really stunned.
He wanted to sue the company that did the work.
So, when I buy a bike that says new top or bottom end....... needless to say, I am a skeptic......
The four stroke engine: That's one stroke for producing power and three for wearing the engine out.

Been selling and buying used bikes for the past 25 years. When I sell, I have a clear concious, and any bike I sell is 100% mechanically mint, and I always ask reasonably cheap money. I'ts never taken me more than a week to sell a used bike. On the flipside, i've had to read and listen to every bull $hit sales pitch that you could imagine. I never let on that I have over 25 years of MX bike experience, I just keep quiet until my closing comments and then walk away. The seller now realizes he bull $hitted the wrong person. A list of my favorites :

1) All Pro Circus performance done up KX250 "it's my wifes bike"

2) "fluids changed after EVERY ride"  (yea ok buddy)

3) "race ready but never raced"  (true race bikes are the ones that have been maintained)

4) "never raced" (only beaten every weekend, then put away wet)

5) " Needs a little"  (translates to you will be opening up a can of worms)

6) "needs carb cleaned"  (if you know exactly that thats the issue why didn't you just simply clean the carb before selling ?)

7) "vintage "  ( does this make your MX bike more valuable or less ?)

8 ) "fresh top end"  (recently blown up)

9) "fresh bottom end)  (recently totally blown up)

10) "way too fast for me" (then why are you willing to trade for a bigger bike in another posted ad ?)

11)  "need it gone by the weekend"  (seller got arrested for road riding his dirt bike and is headed off to jail on monday)

12) "all new plastic"    (the bike fell off the trailer on the highway from cheap tie-downs)

 :-D

what about the ones where they say that the air filter , oil filter ( 4 stroke) , oil has been changed every ride?
c'mon changing the air filter EVERY ride is not possible unless your rich and have alot of time on your hands to go out and get an air filter at $35 a piece AND the cleaning detergent , and filter oil.
