Gas cap size K5
« on: May 06, 2011, 09:49:12 AM »
Does anyone know if the kx250 and kx500 have the same size gas caps? and if so are there any differences from year to year?
Just an old guy that enjoys going fast, I was in the army for 6 years and bought my first K5 when I returned from basic training. I raced a yz60 from age 6 to 8  a kx80 from 8 to 12  a kx125 from 12-17 intermediate class on k5 which I've owned 3.

Nobody knows if any other model year gas cap will fit an 02 k5? the dealership doesn't know either but I figured one of you guys might.

LOL  :-D I certainly did ask blaster and I asked everyone at this dealer if any other model kawasaki gas cap would fit the 02 kx500 and they said nope not a chance even the techs and parts guys all said nope you're s**t out of luck (they hate 2 strokes) lol they're biased against 2 strokes man just trying to keep the k5 down.

I kept telling them that some other bike would have to have the same size gas cap as the 02 k5 I mean how sick would that be to have a different sized cap on everything so crossing them off list now.

They only have 4 strokes and couldn't even line me up with crush washers for the pipe :(

Thanks for the info much appreciated I've been out of this for way too long I feel like a fish.

And dealers wonder why they are going out of business right and left.
Sure, it's partly the economy but a big part is apathy and lack of service.
It would have taken them all of about 1 minute to look it up.
Instead they fiddle around and send you from one department to another.
I'd contact them and ask for the owner.
He deserves to know that his employees are going to ruin his company.
Then again maybe he knows and does not give a rip...  :|

Find another dealer. If this is the help you got with a simple gas cap question,  I CRINGE  :?  at the thought of what you would have gotten for an answer if you had a more technical KX engine question... unfortunately there is good dealers, and bad ones. I had the privelage of working for a succesfull Kawi/Suz/Yam dealer back in the late 90's.  I had the clear advantage of deep dirt and snowmobile experience which made my job answering questions very fact based and fun helping people. If I did not know the answer to a customers question, I simply said "I can't answer that, let me find you someone that can. Customers DON'T like to be BS'ed....

I asked them for jets today and they said they did not have anything for my bike so I said it's a kehein carb so do you have anything for a 39mm kehein and they hym hawed around and rolled the ole eyes and me and broght out a jet kit for that very same carb.

I said look man I don't want you to hurt yourself or anything I'm not trying to wear anyone out at work this early but I'm a good customer to have around I spend a lot of money on bike parts OEM and aftermarket not to mention oil/lubes you name it and they said 2 strokes died a long time ago that I'm a fossil and I asked him how it would feel to tell his pals a fossil kicked his ass so I ordered a few other parts from him after he was much more receptive and they should be in next wednesday.

This bike was jetted way too fat and I'll upload a few pics of the bike in a little while it started pouring right after the bike was unloaded :( what are the odds?

Here is an awesome website that you can physically identify your needed jet and purchase . I have like 4 different carbs, and PJ has jets for every carb ever made !

Thanks for the short cut and in a very small and rural farming community like mine you would expect a little better service to be honest but that's why dealerships are biting the dust one after another with the internet so handy they are cutting their own throats.

Here is my new bike and I cleaned the air filter and went down from a 168 to a 165 changed the oil and drained the fuel that was in it and put 94 octaine and amsoil at 32 to 1 and changed spark plug and it's the perfect color like chocolate milk and the throttle response is instant with just a pipe and silencer on it for performance mods so it's basically a stock bike and I'm quite happy with the throttle response and pull through 4th and 5th all the way to topped out a very fun bike.

Entire album so I don't eat too much bandwidth and the bike has all new ufo plastic except the gas tank so that's why the tank is a little different color than the rest of the bike but that will be fixed soon after the suspension is reworked with the best stuff available.

Thanks delphi the 2 strokes will rise again :) and I really can't believe I found one in this condition with a 50 year old owner that rode it on the street and trails mostly so I am waiting until winter to go after the engine mods but it's going for suspension right away the works for the k5 I say.

Now lets see here, You claim mostly stock on that bike. But it did not come with lights and blinkers(or the stator to run them) from the factory. So there may be more work done to the engine than you think! Just advice here, in the pic it looks like it has been led away from stock a bit to me. Chk it out.

ALSO, The 2t's NEVER WENT AWAY!! I hate to hear that out of people!(not you!) Why then, when KTM, the leader of dirtbike manufactuing in the world, Has THREE maybe FOUR brand new 2011 model bikes THAT ARE 2-STROKE! I will tell you why, the higher ups at KTM know that they are still competitive in all types of racing, have a HUGE following(almost cult at this point!), And are far cheaper to maintain, add HP @ home, and race. Not too mention if you really know how to RIDE! You can whip the 4t's in some aspects, and at least keep up in others! Once the tree huggers realize they are hugging the wrong tree, we will get our 2 strokes back in the racing circuits. They are a whole lot more fun to listen to in the stands(ping-ping-ping-wwhhaaaa!), The races smell better(love that smell), And I think the track layout is cooler to watch. They never used to slow down, they would fly through the track the whole race. Not this skid stop it into a corner and lug it out right into a triple silliness we have now! OK, I will get down off the soap box now. :-D

Oh yeah it's had some aftermarket parts added onto it but the bike was mostly ridden on trails and the street he even drove it to work and I've plated it in michigan so I can hit the dirt roads and even take off to the store if I want to without getting a ticket.

It has a pipe and silencer and fender mod but never was rejetted it had the stock jet which made it way to rich but unless the engine has been rebuilt it's not been ridden hard because the compression is that of a new bike and I've had a new 88K5 and new 01K5 so I know how to start them it's a tight engine.

I'm sending it to a race shop for suspension front and rear it's about $1400 for everything tuned to my weight and riding style and environment.

My bikes were ridden hard and the subframe was always chewed on from hard braking in the corners but this doesn't even have the paint scratched on the subframe unless he replaced it.

I guess I'm excited to find one this clean as far as the paint being perfect and no cracks of any type after some of the turds I looked at and wasted a lot of time and gas to go see bikes that were advertised as clean or "won't find one this nice ever again" was another famous line I heard when looking and the bike barely ran or needed a clutch and engine kicked over with my hand lol but you know what I'm saying this bike is just what the doctor ordered and I'm acting like a kid again.

I can't stand it when the 4 stroke guys talk about how much better or faster they are when it's just not true because the service honda bikes turned better lap times than the 450s did and the tree huggers combined with the money grab in play to rebuild and maintain the 4 strokes seems to be the biggest reason they have taken over I could be wrong but this is my opinion.

Yes Yes and Yes  Thats cool that it's plated too. Sweet on the street im sure! I'm not sure why us 2t guys get ragged on so bad, maybe someday we will rule again. Until then we are the outlaws!   I love how everyone speaks conservation in this state, when 90% of it is owned by the paper company!
I guess it's a $5,000.00 fine if you get caught on thier roads! Maine "the way life should be" ?for who?
