Looking for recomendations on (rear) tire selection for my kx5.
I ride in the Pacific Northwest in the mud and rocks and roots and so forth.  Kinda hard to put a finger on the terain type relative to tire selection in terms of soft/intermediate  or intermediate/hard etc..
 
I just like a tough looking tire that will hold up all right and not be stripped of all its knobs, and that of coarse will get me some versatile traction.
 
I hear good things about the michelin s12, but looking at it, i get the impression my motor will shred that turkey in no time.

I've run a Maxxis IT,kind of heavy but for the price works good and last(I also ride in every kind of terrain there is)I never tried one but hear the IRC MB5 rounds the knobs slightly in the rocks when new,then last a long time and is a great all around tire,but it loves mud.

You will be happier with a Michelin M12 than an S12, as the S12 will not last as long.  Also, I used to use IRC tires exclusively, so slapped one on the big KX last time.  Held up OK, but I don't think as well as the M12, so I will be returning to the M12 for the next rear.

  It's been monsooning in Kamloops for the last bunch of weeks. I've given my Kenda Millville a good thrashing in the mud, rocks and roots and it came up shining.  After listening to members of this site I was considering the Maxxis IT (got a great review in a recent MX mag too) but my Millville is working (and lasting) too well to ignore.  I might even get brave and try the Millville front (since my D755 sucks in mud). My buddies M12 michelins also were great under the same conditions. Cam.

I am still trying to find a front tire that gives me the confidence I need.  For the rear I am very pleased with the Maxxis IT.  IRC makes a great one.  The Michelin MS2 I am running now maintains good traction on everything but loose gravel.  It seems to be holding up very well on wear as well.

I have heard nothing but great things about the Maxxis Maxcross IT but have not tried one yet.  The last tire I put on was the new Dunlop 739 Desert A/T.  Don't confuse that with the standard 739.  I believe they are different tires.  The Desert A/T is probably the strongest tire I have ever worked with.  When I eventually wore it out and went to change it, I removed all of the air from the tube.  You could barely tell.  The tread life was better than the M22 that I was religiously using prior to that and after the experience of changing that tire, you could definitely run that thing flat at some impressive speeds.  Oh, I don't change that tire myself anymore.  Too many bloody knuckles.

The IT is only a good rear tire,if you want to go fast dont run a IT up front, its ok for trail riding.I've been going to try a IRC VE  because I heard its a good front tire even though its cheap.Any favorite front tires?

The Maxxis is garbage up front. I'm currently running front and rear Kenda Carlsbads and am very happy with them for the AZ desert.

Kenda Millvilles if there's gonna be some moisture around. Carlsbads if it's dry.

Manny,  Have you tried the Millville front?  I was fondling one at the bike shop the other day (it looked good) but have yet to meet someone who has tried one. It was 1/2 the price of the michellins in Canada. Cam.

Nate- I also live in the Pac NW and have been running the michelin S12 in the rear of my KX5 and I think it has worked great. It held up very well in all conditions. Last year I ran one all season ( April - October) and put over 600 miles , documented  by the odometer. This includes riding the Desert 100  and Idaho City Qualifier. I was suprised with no major chunking of these tires. IMHO, good tire!
