Intake tract thoughts
« on: January 08, 2011, 04:21:27 AM »
I currently have an 06 KX450f/06 KX250 conversion. I have a friend with identical conversion, though constructed abit different. My bike has a serious problem off idle to around 3,000 rpms, its just very sluggish and slow to rev. Heres where my problem lies, the other bike the intake tract is just as stock with the reeds and carb close to original location. When my bike was fabbed, the intake tract was done entirely different and uses 2 3/8 inch reed spacers and a 1 inch plastic spacer block. So the reeds are nearly completely out of the cylinder. My guess as to why mine runs so different down low is the reeds/carb are spaced back so far that its hurting the signal in the lower RPMs. I know typically spacing the reeds back offers more lowend, but at some point its gotta be too much? I know this is the 500 forum, but I figured some of you may have experimented with different carb/reed locations. When it was originally built it was spacers x3, then reeds, then boot, then carb. When I reassemble it I`m gonna try reeds first, then all the spacers, then the boot/carb. This will space the carb further from the reeds but get the reeds further into the cylinder. Any thoughts/experiences from anybody?

Hello.
If you have some pics, please post them.
Thanks!

Spizz, you are on the right track by thinking that with too much spacing on the reed cage it would be too much.  There really isnt any need for 3 reed spacers, have you ran it without them?

No pics, the motor is currently disassembled, but will have it together in a few days. I haven`t ran it without the spacers. The reason there is so much spacing is the carb had to be back that far to get it to attach to the airboot. I suspect I`m gonna have to rework the filter side, and remove some of the intake side spacers.

That is where I would start.
Modifying a airbox to carb boot is a lot easier then that mass of reed spacers and will certainly eliminate the question of where the problem is.

wow, 3 spacers? i currently run 1 spacer but have not noticed any difference in low mid or high end. i think i will take the spacer out in the spring before i start riding again. i have not ridden since late april when i broke my wrist in a little endo flop on the k5. i would recommend removing all the spacers and ridding a few times in stock setup and then start with one spacer so you can feel for yourself if it makes any difference at all.

Thats my plan, and I`m currently trying to figure out which airboot to use. Currently has a Honda boot, but I think a KX250F boot is longer?
