Help! 2004 KX250f almost never starts.

Hey:

I have a 2004 Kx250f that is a real pain to start.  Sometimes it will fire over after you kick it a million times.  It will usually bump start.  Once it's running, it runs fine. 

So far I have done all of this stuff:

Leak down test (less then 2%)
Valves are within spec
valve timing is set perfectly
new ignition coil
new plug
totally cleaned carb and messed with the choke jetting a little
The bike has a high compression piston and was tough to kick, so I added the manual decompression kit and disconnected the auto decompression.
checked the stator coil (resistance test)
disconnected the neutral switch (was actually like that when i bought it)

When i hold the plug up to the motor and cycle the kick starter there is spark.
The bike mostly just backfires when I try to start it.
I even tried to spray ether in it and it would just backfire.

Do I have a bad CDI box?

Any other suggestions?

I am at my whits end with this thing.

I forgot to mention, after a round of trying to start it, the plug is wet when i pull it out.

I have seen this happen on 04's before, every one had bad valves, as you know they are titanium with a hard coating so you can't cut them you have to replace them. you should look at heavier valve springs to prevent floating them which is most likely what causes the valve to wear in the first place.

thank you for your reply. I have seen posts dealing with this on other forums. It makes sense as the bike is acting like it has low compression. How do the bad or worn out valves pass the Compression and leakdown tests?

Would you recomend going to stainless valves?  Should I do new guides at the same time?

I'll be honest 4 strokes scare the crap out of me, the performance is unparrelled, but the thought of blowing one up has me spending money on pm stuff just to ensure they don't give me trouble. when we raced 250f's we got a new one every year and as such had no troubles, we still get a new 450 every year or two, and then I've got a couple that are modded for a specific competition, those get new cranks every other year and new valves and springs every year. I would check the valves to see if their loose in the guides and not replace them if they don't need it, as changing them is somewhat of a challenge if you don't have the proper tools. So to answer your question on valves, the reason they go titanium is that they are so light and have a minimal performance edge over stainless, I think stainless are more durable, but I don't know this from personal experience, even though for a play bike I wouldn't have any qualms about trying them. Not sure how compression would show good on the leak down and the valves still leak, I'm only telling you what my experience is. look at heavier valve springs, there has been some debat as to whether this is the reason the valves fail or at least a contributor, once they float they beat the seats out and then they are on a road to complete failure.

The 04's as I recall were a bit harder to start anyway, pro circuit made a shorter kicker, allowing the motor to spin faster and theoretically start easier.

I hear ya.  This is my first four stroke MX bike.  The two strokes are so much easier and reliable!  The four strokes ride so sweet though huh?  I go got this bike in a trade, it has a bunch of nice aftermarket stuff (triples, full Ti exhaust, ported head, rekluse, cams, suspension, new wheels and tires, holeshot device, etc) on it and is in really good shape.  It doesn't really owe me anything at this point so i have no problem putting some money into it for a new top end.  What do I want to look for on the valves?

Try to get the GSX-R 1000 valve springs, They are the same as procircuit, and verry cheap.
Valve's arent expensif and easy to replace.
Had mine cdi broke also, replace it with a HPI 2 curve.
Did you try to set idle a bit higher? Had mine at 3500rpm or more, it started in 2 kicks. Even when hot.

I'm glad I saw this thread.  I am going through the exact same thing with my 04 KX250F as well.  When you had suggested the GSXR springs were you suggesting them for use with stainless or Ti valves?

We always used stock piston, valve's and GSX-R springs.
When replacing a piston and valve spring or without. With will give 1 HP more than without.
Don't know how it is now, in 04 only stock piston worked, everything else gave probleme like oil cusumption.

And in Holland stock Suzuki parts were the cheapest to get.
