Update on the ignition for everyone.
I received the ignition and flywheel with much excitement and installed it, only to find a very small issue that Alex helped me with (it isn't even worth mentioning). Initial viewing was that it is of very high quality and is almost a work of art. Once the issue was sorted, the install was very straight forward and easy once you have the dial gauge. I set mine up in an old spark plug and set it at 80 thou past TDC initially. Tried to start it and didn't want to go. Then realised (duh!!!) that it is supposed to be "before TDC", and I set it after TDC, so it was so retarded it wouldn't run (bit like the owner in this instance).
Once that was fixed (really easy with the rattle gun and the puller supplied), the 500 started up very easily and idles better than before (just some fine tuning on the idle needed). I re-built this engine from top to bottom (including con rod and pins) as the past owner ran it with an air filter that was falling to pieces while riding it in sandy pine forests, so you can imagine what it did to the engine. Once I re-built it, it had troubles getting it above half revs, and I didn't want to replace electrics as I was getting the Powerdynamo set up to power the KLX ignition system.
Finally got off my backside and finished the installation and took it for a ride just before xmas and all I can say is "WOW". It revs cleanly, lots of grunt and no smoke (I tried jetting it with the original ignition with no luck and this has now made the KX run very cleanly.
Guys, if you are wanting high powered lighting and smooth running, seriously (and I mean SERIOUSLY) consider this modification. I cannot be happier. I am now just about to cut up the KLX and install the 500 engin in it. Watch out for updates. I am keeping records for the conversion to share.
