Drilled flywheel

Has anyone drilled the flywheel to lighten it a little?

Ok, any recomendations on where to get it done? How much to take off?

I ride desert, and alot of single track, I just want a bit more snap...

the ideal setup would be for u to the 86-89 flywheel stator , its got a far smaller and lighter flywheel ,   
if i was going to skim the flywheel i would rather get someone who could balance it aswell

does the wheel and stator bolt up with no mods?

yes it bolts right up.  you may want to get a cdi from one of those years too or you will have to splice two wires together from the newer cdi to work with the older stator.  I had to splice the Black/Yellow and White/Green wires together off of the stator and then that gets plugged into the Black/Yellow on the CDI.

Hmm. Ok... So what am I getting out of my kx5 by doing this? Is it going to kill my bottom end? I want some to stay, but I also want a little quicker revving...

You won't lose alot of weight maybe 8-12oz. But that what a flywheel weight adds to the OD. You still will have good buttom end.

 I think you may be able to drop a little more mass by lightening the clutch basket.
(I can't remember the site but will look for it)
  The Idea was to improve oiling, however there was a substantial amount of holes drilled in the basket.
It may not appear to be much, but with the combination of the flywheel & Basket it should be heading in the right direction.

Dont really lose bottom end per say, its still there, you just lose that weight buffer that keeps you from stalling when you let off the gas and the motor reacts a lot more quickly to changes. Its just a lot more touchy. I have an RD350 engine with the whole flywheel lathed away down to a nub (requires a battery to run!). The builder was scared the generator would fly apart at the revs we built it to run. The crank and clutch basket mean the engine isn't near as bad as you would think. It revs beautifully though
