Hi everyone,
I've been riding my 500 a fair bit lately and I always felt that it was strong.  Last weekend I went out for a ride with a friend that just bought a nice 06 ktm 300 exc.  I took it for a ride and it was a very nice bike with more power than I expected it to have.  After a bit of riding on the 300 I jumped on the 500 and took it for a blast to compare the two.  To me it felt so much faster that the 300 that I couldn't stop smiling.  When I got back he asked me if the 500 was heaps faster and I said yes.  After this we both went for a ride together.  Our track has some nice straights and we did some drags against each other.  The amazing thing was that although I got the initial jump, he kept with me and started to pull me in.  We did this a number of times and the same thing happened every time. My bike felt a lot faster but it wasn't at all.  To say that I was disappointed would be an understatement.  We both weigh about the same and the 300 was running stock gearing.  I wa running 15 - 46.  I thought my bike would blow his away but it didn't.
Has anyone had any experience against a 300 and am I correct in thinking that my 500 should blow the 300 away.  Maybe technology has caught up with the 500's or something is seriously wrong with my bike.  My bike always seemed to go well but but I often read that the front should lift up in any gear when it is pinned.  I have the throttle pinned a lot on our open track and it rarely wants to lift on it's own - maybe I am down on horsepower? Any opinions would be appreciated.

Cheap stuff first, I would check the compression, air filter........
I have a friend with an XR400, could not get it to run correctly.
His buddy has one also.  They traded carb, coil, stator......still ran bad when he
pinned it.  Turned out to be a strap from his pack he had on the rear fender.
It would suck in the intake snorkel at wide open.

I'm planning on doing a compression check as soon as possible. 
Should the 300 be keeping up with me or should I be blowing it away?

Good tire on the rear wheel?  I would think you should pull away. I've seen a few KTM 300's but never ridden with anyone that owned one.  Last weekend seemed like half the bikes at Crosstimbers here in OKC were 2 strokes.

I raced against a late model KTM300SX model last month at the Sand Drags & I was on my KX250 which pulls fairly well. The only visible mods on this KTM are VForce Reeds & FMF exhaust & He was slowly pulling away from me  :x. I weigh in about 215 & this kid is probably about 130, but I really dont feel that was the difference as that bike ran VERY WELL. I did a little research on the KTM & found out it is making mid 50s in HP stock form, so a with just a little more tuning, I would think it could pull in a KX500 not running at its peak performance. Roost Daddy & Crew has a few KTMs running at their track, & should be able to give more feedback, but as it stands now I have more work to do on my 250 (& maybe lose a few lbs  :-o)

yes the new 300's run dang good. they should have no problem running with a stock 500. they have the torque and hp of a 450. also watch out for updated 380's there is a lot of them out in the world now. i personally know of 10 not counting my 2. and i have no problem telling someone that just got smoked ether of them is just a 250. there is even a hand full of 380s sitting in the 07-10 frames.
a stock or slightly modded cr or kx 500 is no match for the bike on the right. and most people will believe its just a 250.

I'm not sure we have any 300's around, but there was a 380 and a 250 with a 380 top-end running with us.  Both of these bikes were no match for an ordinary 250 and could even hang with some 500's.  sorry i couldnt give any info. on the 300, but I will agree with BOB that the 380's are quite impressive.

My vote is on the back tire.   His was better.  Put more power to the ground

I have run into times where my 250 will hang with my 500 for a while as the 500 is blowing the tire...

Mostly on hardpack with a dusting of loose dirt sand over top is where they will do it...

On flat ground a well tuned 250/300 will give a stock 500 a run for the money...they rev high.  It all goes back to the rpm vs torque debate.

Thanks for the help guys,

I think all of your points are valid especially the torque vs hp point.  I would get up to speed much quicker but the 300 would seem to rev out and catch me.  I seemed to run out of revs.  I wonder if I ran taller gearing if that would make a difference.
If I did some of the recommended mods for power, would it give me a big jump or just create more wheelspin with less rideability?
I feel sick even thinking about itas I love the 500 but I'm wondering if it might be time to move onto some newer technology.

I hear ya'. Its definately weird. I have both a 250 and a 500. The 250 is basically stock and the 500 has some mods, but not maxed out. I hillclimb against all cc's of bikes. The hillclimbs are seperated in their classes by cc's or age groups, but we also race for the overall Fast Time of the Day. Fast Times of the Day are often had by 500's, but there has been plenty of Fast Times of the Day ran by 250's, KTM 380's and 450 four strokes. My buddy rides a 750 Triple 3 cylinder 2stroke, but he rarely wins fast time. When I ride the 500 its like my 250 on constant nitrous, but not always faster on the timer. The 500 does have alot of power, but there are so many things that go into a fast drag race or hillclimb, its freakin nuts. If the 300 can put it to the ground, then you're beat. Power isn't the issue necessarily. We monkey with gearing, tire pressure, tire patterns, Cut tire/ full nobb, rider position, hole preparation and suspension (and more) to get the power to the ground. The power is pretty much the constant, but you have to play with the things you can change to have a quick time.
  My general rule on my other bikes is to gear as tall as you can without a bog, and that is fast. The 500 doesn't play with those rules. It will just roast the tire getting you squirrely or loop out, when geared too high. I would guess that your set-up, riding position or possibly something as simple as 5lbs of air pressure cost you more than being down on power.

But when my  stock K5 has a fresh top end, fresh tire and fresh clutch plates, click 4th gear and it pulls away like a top fuel dragster....If any bike had a slight chance it would be the 380 on its best day.  Your 15/46 gearing seems a bit high for track racing though. Thats the gearing I would use for high speed runs on the ice. Your losing some serious  acceleration with that gearing that would let you pull away quickly.
As for track racing,  one thing to remember as others have stated, sometimes its easier to go faster with less bike.

My 300 pumpkin is what got me wanting the big K5 so much!  I was actually looking for a a KTM520 at the time, found it, but the dealer blew it up in front of me trying to get it jetted correctly.  So I quickly ran away from that place and went to another trusty KTM dealer.  Went there looking for the 520 which they didn't have at the time.  But they did have a leftover last year 380 and a 300 on the floor.  So I took a used 380 for a spin (wouldn't let you ride the new ones) and about peed myself!!  Could not keep the front end down!  I came off a KTM400EXC and the difference was stunning.  I was grinning from ear to ear and was set on buying the leftover 380.  However, the dealer talked me into the brand spanking new up to date 2004 300 EXC (Which was probably a grand more, thats why he talked me into it).  I didn't get to test ride it, but he for sured me the power was similar to the 380.  While it was definately a ripper, it just didn't have that adrenaline pumping two-stroke screaming power like the 380 had.  To this day I wish I would have bought the 380, might still have it if I did.  But I can't say anything wrong about the 300, it was one of my most favorite machines, lightweight, super strong, could flick it around like no other.  I think my WR450 is a bit stronger on power, but weighs a ton, and amazingly, I like my WR better than my 525 I had.

So now I finally have the big bore of my dreams, and still haven't ridden it yet, probably another month or so and I'll get to finally ride the big K5.  I'm positive this thing is going to rock my world more than anything I've owned though, if it doesn't, thats okay, I will for sure make it, but I have no doubt!

The track was a fairly open high speed type enduro/desert track.  The initial acceleration is where I got the jump but when we got to the higher speeds is where he reeled me in.  His bike kept revving out and picking up speed.  I seemed to run out of revs.  Maybe my bike isn't revving out as far as it should or I needed to gear even higher?
I haven't pulled the motor down since I have owned it so chances are that it needs a freshen up.


I don't want a reason to get rid of the bike as it has been my dream bike since I was a kid. 

Sounds like with it running right, it should still hold it's own out in the high speed stuff :-D

What pipe is on it? the most popular pipes for the bikes are the torque pipes but if you try to ride it like a 250 revving it out with one of them on, you'll be disappointed. Especially if its got some big ol dents in it. It keeps pulling a ways past peak but not nearly so hard. Jetting can make a world of difference too.
Ive got a top end pipe on mine, it still pulls on bottom but you can hear the change of tone as the revs climb. Then it goes crazy. I really don't know how it compares on the dyno to the bottom end pipes though since there is a huge shortage of KX500 dyno charts, especially ones that show rpms. The only one ive ever seen was from an ancient magazine shootout with all stock bikes.
