Engine id help?
« on: May 08, 2010, 04:00:01 PM »
Friend of mine just bought a KX250. Was told it was a 96 and we drove across the state to pick it up for cheap. Needs new rod/bearing, cylinder replated, and a new piston. I need to know what year the engine is. Ran the frame vin and it came up 1992 so I need to make sure we get the right parts for the right year engine. I have spent about 2 hours looking for a way to decode the engine number with no luck. Any info is greatly appreciated.

The engine number is: KX250JE000441

Goat,
As stated before the J model is 92/93 years (J1=92 & J2=93) and they both have the same chassis. The 92 model was the first year of the long stroke/small bore motors & the cylinder setup has the KIPS logo on the left side like the KX500 & the front floating rotor has 8 floating pins. The 93 cylinder is the first year with the new style power valve and has a cover on the left side & no KIPS logo & the front rotor only has 6 pins.
If you still need more info let me know & I will get some pics of the 2 different cylinders posted. Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the info everyone. There should be a engine id search like the vin # search.

The four stroke engine: That's one stroke for producing power and three for wearing the engine out.

Well no worries, a lot of stuff swaps out 92-04.
97-04 use a larger shift fork pin set and have one less case bolt.
Since your using 94 valves with the 94 cylinder your good to go there.
