you may laugh at the freeplay on the cable but i used to use this idea when ridings enduros on a yellow250 i always had more than average play because of moving around the bike so much i didnt want to grab the gas too quickly...i also duct taped the cable to the top of the carb and the cable to the adjuster up top,never had any probs...

To each his own, but I hate bikes with a lot of free play in the throttle. It feels sloppy and gives me less connection to the motor, making throttle application more abrupt.

 I apologize MoRad,
   Putting the free play/ slack in at the adjuster on the throttle housing has never caused any problems for my kids or  novice riding my bikes. However I took for granted that the wrong approach would pull the throttle cable out of the top of the carb or possibly the throttle housing.
 Most guys reading the thread may not Have as much expierience setting it up properly.
      I'll take it off my list on the previous post so as not to confuse any one.
   I would rather drop it than have someone suffer an S.T.C.
If a reader continues down the thread they could still use JFabs securement and reasoning.

excessive throttle free play equates to nothing more than premature wrist fatigue from unnecessary throttle tube twisting, and "nothing" happenin'

I dial in just enough so I feel a tad of slack with the bars all the way pitched to the right. This is when your throttle cable will be the tightest.

If you lowered the compression ratio it would take alot of the low  end hit out of it. It makes such a difference taking .040 off the head to add power. If you add a .040 head gasket and raised the cylinder .010 it would make it a slug in my book.

How come nobody suggested urinating in the fuel tank yet ? Probably worth about -15 hp, but the stench might be an issue to the riders behind ya'

The two easiest methods are to bend in the reed stops.  This reduces the fuel intake and power.  The most effective is blocking the exhaust.  A simple restrictor can be made to fit inside the silencer end.  The washer in the exhaust port works but it needs to be fairly thin and the diameter must be exact. Cam.

be careful with the restrictor in the silencer. most exhaust restrictors will be at the front flange. restricting exhaust out the end will hold heat in the pipe changing its tuning for higher RPM's. and if you hold in to much heat pistons will start to melt.

Decreasing power for new owners!!! Bunch of pussies!!!! Thats why you buy a 500 2 stroke is for the insane power hit and acceleration. If you dont like it then get on a 4 stroke problem solved leave the 500's for the people who like the power :evil:

My KX500 was my first ever dirtbike. I didn't really need a power reducer. Fear of death handled most of it...

If one really wanted to make a limiter of some sort though, why not put something like cable insulation etc... around the bare throttle cable inside the carburetor so it stops the slide from opening beyond a certain point? Need a lil more speed? Unscrew the slide cap off, trim off some material, there you go.
