Hello to all, old Kaw racer, new to KX 500 though
« on: January 04, 2010, 02:48:44 PM »
Hey guys, the names Doc. Im a chiropractor in SC and I just recently acquired a 1995 KX 500 in great shape. Now my intentions with this bike are a lil different. I want to make it a land speed bike. I have been doing some events on the East coast for a while and always liked the power to weight ratio of dirtbikes and 2 strokes in general. Something like the one Ive been reading about on here but it will most likely be a streamliner as opposed to the production racer like the one ive read about here. I dont want to divuldge my plans but I have some tricks up my sleeve. ive been racing NOS injected 4 cylinder streetbike and been 192 on my daily rider, 05' ZX-12r built.
Now I have been thinking of running NOS on this bike, say maybe 15 horsepower jetting with fuel enrichment(wet). Does anyone on here know much about spraying 2 strokes?
I am researching as much as I can and this is what Ive got so far:
1995 kx 500 stock bore, fresh piston now and seals but I want to replace all seals, gaskets, piston with window mod, head reshaping, compression release, new carb.
Bike already has a gnarly Gold series pipe now which is like new. I am interested in this higher top gear Ive read about. Def need to look into that.
Thats about it for now. Thanks for all the great information. Keep it up.

Welcome to the site. I whipped up a NOS plate one night just as a gag. I could ship it with a small rubber inner tube looking deal that I used a long time ago. You being a chiropractor can figure out what to do with that after hitting the buttom on your test bike.  :-D

Hi Doc welcome you are doing thing way out of my league but a lot of snowmobile and other two stroke applications use these guys

Hey thanks for the welcome guys. I am aqcuiring parts for the build now shopping around and looking for things I will need. Jfab that NOS spacer plate is perfect. It looks like it goes between reed cage and intake, will reed spacer mod work with this installed? I know a 20 shot of nos is prob a big jump over gains with spacer only, but both would be best for flow etc. Also, with a new wiseco windowed piston, how much nos could be sprayed theoretically? For one mile runs at maxton, with big bikes, I dont usually like to go over 20 hp per piston with intake charge temps getting real high over the longer duration. Forged pistons would be a lil better as well as a solid copper head gasket and ARP head bolts. Does anyone make this stuff for the KX? Just beef the top end up and make the comp decent enough to run real strong on the NOS.
Also, wheres the best place to get a complete gasket kit, seals or bearings for these bikes? I have seen suppliers on here for pistons, head work, and some other stuff. Im just trying to find some suppliers to put things together. Thanks for everyones input. I appreciate it.

I would start out with one Fogger and start low like you said. I would run a 20/24 or 24/28 with 6psi to start. Read the plug and look at the top of the piston offen. If you  are NOS savy you already know this, if not you are about to find out! If I were going to spray a KX500 I would use a ported piston, Vforce reeds, b9?? plug and I would start with as close to stock compression ratio as I could while still cleaning up the head. I think if you get to carried away with the NOS or compression you will never keep it lit or in one piece.

I'm using the boondocker system on my 500 (dry system), I have shot as much as 20hp but usually only run 15hp shot. the plating will suffer from the nitrous, in my experience the stock plating will flake off the exhaust port area, I ended up sleeving that cylinder to get it to live. typically mine runs no more than 15-20 secs, how big a bottle are you planning to run to go for a minute?
I do have a 650 twin with a cold fusion wet system, I'm shooting 25hp total, I do believe the wet system makes more hp, or at least it feels like it. Jfab reccommends the v force reeds, that is one thing I most defineately would NOT do, they will last maybe one run (at a minute) and totally disintegrate, when I pulled my brand new reed cage there was only one petal left, I went with boysen reeds and have had great success. I do use the vforce on my gas bike and have had great success, so I don't know if there is a reaction to the nitrous or what the story was but I wasn't willing to risk another failure.

Thanks for the info guys. So the Vforce reeds come apart or disintegrate? Good to know, Guess I wont be getting those. I have looked at those and the boyesen's. Now tell me what you think of this, for the wet kit, what if I sprayed alcohol into the wet system with race gas. I know it keeps the charge temp down and wouldnt be too entirely complex to add a tank and small pump. Just a thought.
When the vforce reeds came apart, was there anything left? Was it in the cylinder? Did it end up in the pipe? Im just curious.
I think one fogger would be adequate. One would work with the single cylinder fine.
jfab PM me when you got some time, Id like to find out about some of your services and set up a time to chat.
Thanks for all the input guys. Its informative and appreciated.

Can you run straight alcohol or is it against the rules? On some of the diesel pickups they inject windshield washer fluid to keep exhaust temps down, so it would probably work, just not sure how well.

the vforce petals were totals gone, not to be found in the cylinder or pipe, the one petal that was left looked like it was ripped apart, this happened at full song, I heard the motor pitch change and when he came back it was running like crap. It had brand new reeds so that couldn't be the problem right, wrong.

One nozzle will work fine, you can get all the horsepower you can handle, plus the wet system is very bottle pressure critical. A bigger bottle would be best case at maintaining the pressure. on the cold fusion about 1100 psi is perfect, once the pressure drops it goes rich. The boodocker system isn't as bottle pressure critical as the richness is based on bottle pressue and changes with bottle pressure, and it has only one solenoid.

How are you going to activate the system? on the 500 I modified a throttle by adding a micro switch, on my 650 and 450 I use the throttel position switch in the carb.

Washer fluid is what I have seen in the past with big turbos and superchargers. I think it would work fine for this instance, but so would race fuel.
Who makes a good gasket set for these, i have seen some like cometic or Kaw, whos a good supplier for the total engine gasket set?
Does anyone currently make an all copper head gasket? Same thickness as stock, I dont want to up compression too much if at all. Good power seems to lie in the top end of two strokes, is it pretty standard to sleeve these motors. i have read of a few on here, do they run well? Are there any problems associated with sleeving these? I want to run stock bore for at least a season and see how it fares. It will take some time to figure out the equation, the fun lies in trying all sorts of combos.
If I can build it to be 500 cc's good compression, good shaped head and running well, I think the power to weight ratio is a good overall choice with these KX 500's.
Can anyone post some dyno charts of power they have made with standard bore? Id like to see some numbers from some of the bigger bore bikes as well.
Thanks for all your info. This is a great resource.

Why not add the spray on the other side of the reed cage and eliminate the cryogenic shock to the composite reeds?

Its funny you mentioned that Larry, I thought about using it as the spacer plate, just might have to rotate foggers, or if running just one fogger, then move it to a desireable location. I think the vforce reeds are carbon fiber, that may be why they disintegrated, Im unsure of the materials resistance to extreme hot and cold.
Now Ive read several older posts about Carbs, whats the best choice for WOT racing applications? Ive seen some prefer one for trails, or wood riding, or that another provides best miles per gallon, but which makes best HP?
I just noticed a sleeve for a the cylinder on ebay, would it be custom made or is this a part that some aftermarket company has available?
This is a question for Jfab or stewart. ive seen pics of the work you guys have done reshaping heads and setting up squish and CC's. Once the head is shaped, are the insides then polished to resisit heat build up in one area or over casting flaws or imperfections?
Is this also done with the pistons? I have shopped around for pistons, I really like the wisecos available with the window, are these sold with any coatings for friction or heat? If not, can the top be covered for heat resistance and the skirts for lowered friction?
Sorry for the questions, I usually have a few....

I have a 250 cylinder that was plumbed after the reed cage and also in the transfers. Will try to get a pic & post.

in my opinion the 44 Lectron would be your best choice of carb for WOT racing.

Not too sure on what sleeve you found on ebay, but if you want a big bore sleeve, I would check out Advanced Sleeve out of Ohio.  I think their sleeve may start at 86mm and go to 89.5mm for the newer style cylinders. (up to 88mm for the 1988's)
Some guys on here dont care for sleeves, but others think you'll be alright running one.  Take it as you will.  I would think it will save you money in the long run if you want to start stock bore and go bigger down the road.

hope this helps till someone else chimes in.

Cometic will make that copper head for you in a bunch of different thickness for you just give them a call. Also for the stronger head bolts Roostdaddy is running heavy inserts in his cylinder ,not just heli-coils, and I think they would work great with heavier grade bolts cut to length. Also if you talk real sweet to Moto tassinarri they will make you reeds out of heavier carbon-fiber , but it takes a litle talkin, or Roost again has a guy that makes them. CBX
Yep, you can ride it - if YOU can start it !!
