Just to pick everyones mind a bit.....What does everyone use as lapping compound for lapping a head??.  Clover, the valve lapping compound??. Lap on a surface plate or a piece of glass???.  Any thoughts would be  appreciated.

I use 320 wet/dry sandpaper on a cast-iron surface plate. That grit works real good after a fresh machine job. I go a little more aggressive if its a used head.

Lapping is done part-to-part for mating parts.
Surfacing is done on a plate.
Clover is good choice for lapping compound.  I use several grades.
Surfacing is just as JFAB says.  I usually go 320/600 on a calibrated granite plate.  Be sure to use a good spray adhesive on the paper, not tape.
