mobile bike storage stands
« on: April 09, 2009, 02:52:35 AM »
Have you used or know of any storage bike stands that are mobile, compact, durable and sturdy for the garage?
I have several bikes to store in a small space and am looking for a simple garage stand that can be wheeled around to shuffle the bikes into a tight grouping.  The bikes include at least (3) off-road bikes and at least (1) sport bike.  The off-road bikes weigh less than 300 lbs and the sport bike about 450 lbs.
The ideal stand would be able to be wheeled into position under the bike(s) and then raised to lift the bike high enough to get both wheels off the ground.  Min clearance for the off-road bikes is about 12? and would need to get to about 17? to be high enough.  I have not measured the sport bike.
I have looked at the foot pedal lift stands and considered mounting them on some kind of wheeled platform, however most seem to be less than sturdy.  Their tube-in-tube design seems to be pretty loose, allowing the platform to rock a fair bit.
I looked at the HF transmission jacks, but they are really wobbly, especially at full height.  Besides, they require a lot more floor space to jack up, and I like the idea of the one foot elevation lever.
The idea is to get a stand that will allow all the bikes to be pushed together into a tight grouping, and moved as needed.
Any ideas?

Here is one that I build. It could be adapted for anything under 1000lbs. One track, two tracks, a platform...ect. I have a video of myself riding it and the ZX12R to the top but I will spare you all that!  :-D

Hey Freak, I have 12 foot ceilings in my shop. I put the Ninja as high as I could so that I could park my Dodge 1 ton or enclosed motorcycle trailer under the bike with no waisted floor space.
The production model is only 8 feet so that it will fit modern homes. My thought was to build it so that it would fit in the back of a garage. You could then pull the motorcycle on it, raise the motorcycle and them pull your SUV's or extended cab short bed Chevy's hood under the bike and close the garage door. Most moden garages are 20x20 and there is no room left in front of an extended cab short bed truck.

Barryadam,
Have a look at this.  All my bikes are on them so I can wheel them around and stack them together in a corner to save space.  The stands all have swivel castors on the bottom.  There are better pics in my gallery. Cam.

I found this a few days ago. Could probably make your own for cheap. But the price is only $300.00 US. Check out the link

But, I don't see the head dent in the ceiling!  I wanna see the video of how you climbed down after the ride up.  If you had another person lower you & the lift, how did they keep from taking a "break" while you were up there?   :-D :-D :-D :-D

Seriously though, nice job.  I though everyone outside of Southern California had a 60 x 40 garage shop in the yard.

Cam, that's the idea.  I'd rather have something where I'm not trying to lift the bike up onto a moving stand, but if that's not easy to get to, I'll probably end up with exactly what you have.

I don't have that kinda headroom in my residential garage (that applies to JFab's lift as well).  If it was at all possible, I think having three or four bikes suspended from the garage ceiling over our cars would be a bit un-nerving, no matter how much engineering of the supports I did.

u could make this for cheap(harbor freight). all it is a cheap boat wench,a couple pullies and some cable. i think i would us something a little stronger for the cross bar(it looked like it was bending on the quad). the question is how well built is ur home? if its an older one, where they used good wood and where not afraid to put some extra nails in stuff,or one of these cheap track homes they are builting today. if urs is the first,u are probley in good shape. but if urs is the 2nd,id buy some 2x6 and beef up the rafters
