Fill ups

For those that road ride the KX5, what do you do when it comes time to fuel up? Carry some small, pre-measured vials of oil to dump in at time of fuel up?

On another note, has anyone checked MPG?

2005 XR650L

Neither are stock, and both are great desert bikes.

I used to ride a 2-stroke road racer on the street with pre-mix.  I found a rad overflow tank that bolted to the frame to hold the mix oil, then metered it into a small measuring cup.  Using 100:1 and fuel measurement in liters it's easy to do the math in your head. Fun bike. Cam.

When I do the Clayton Okla. dual sport ride I carry a 10oz bottle of 2 stroke oil.  I also have a small bottle that came with my chain saw.  It holds enough for one gallon.  I put marks on it for 1/2 gallon and one gallon.  I carry a 2 gallon gas can with the 3.6 gallon desert tank.

It's hard to figure mileage off road.  I don't do much on road riding because Oklahoma City is so spread out.  OKC is 450 square miles and that's not counting the suburbs.  Plus I want to keep my license.  The K5 is no fun to just ride on the street unless you are racing around.  I streeted mine for riding between trail heads.  Also the state no longer allows off road machines in the Kiamichi mountains, the only exceptions, hunting season and you must be hunting with the proper tags, license, and permits.
I might enjoy the street when I get my 01 K5 in super moto trim.

One other thing.  I carry a one gallon can when I'm in the city.  I don't mix gas and oil in my bike tank.  Mix in the can, dump in tank refill the can when I'm dual sporting. That way I have 5 1/2 gallons on the bike.  I have a KLR650 and I can tell you the K5 is way fun as a dual sport.  The nice thing about the KLR is the range with the near 7 gallon tank.  I use it to ride to the out of state rides.

Danger,

Your tank looks awfully close to your pipe in this picture.. Did you put some sort of shield in between there? I'm just curious because it looks to be the same as mine was when I purchased the bike.. and there is definite thinning in that area. What is an acceptable Gap between the Tank and Expansion chamber? I think the bike was crashed and pipe slightly bent.. Clearly though the upper exhaust tab is broken and hopefully welding it will fix the clearance issue.

I carry a liter of Yamalube 2R and a turkey baster for precision oil measurement.  It looks hokey, but works well.
I only get about 40 - 50 miles per tank, and I have an additional desert tank that I have not tried yet.  After 1 tank, I'm ready for a break!

I have a small dual chamber oil mixing bottle for Sears weed trimmer that I would like to try sometime.  You squeeze the oil into the upper chamber to the appropriate measurement, then pour from that chamber in your tank.  Simple and compact.  Hope it seals OK after I fill it with Yamalube.  I'm thinking this little bottle will make it much easier and convenient to measure and add oil on a trip, carry one of these in a plastic bag, just in case. You don't want to fall on it. BE SURE TO EMPTY OUT THE WEEDWHACKER OIL AND CLEAN THE BOTTLE BEFORE FILLING WITH YOUR PREMIUM TWO-STROKE OIL OF CHOICE.

Disclaimer: Don't dump the oil in the drain, gutter, garden, or neighbor's gas tank, or Danger's thermos. 

It has a built-in measuring cup. Mebbe take the lable off, too, just in case your riding buddies are watching.

not to answer for danger..but my 94 has had similar issues..
i have strips of some sort of artificial cork ,dunno the right word?
its heatresistant,flexible,durable etc:

i have it between tank and pipe at that precise spot,
never had any wear on them again.

I dunno about that Premix bottle.. Ive used one before and.. The top chamber is like what 1 ounce? for 32/1 i usually mix up 5 gallons.. and what is it 20 ounces to a 5 gal container? I would rather not squeeze and dump 20 times to mix up some gas. I have a graduated cylinder from walmart for like 3 bucks.

could be ,in my case it,s a dutch brand aftermarket pipe that sits to high,
so i did the cork layer between them

i have fmf fatty on my road k5 ,but that pipe sits perfect,clearance enough.
the dutch DPR pipe sits 1/4 inch to high ,can,t adjust without reweld it,s exp.chamber..
so thats why the cork strip is for protection,works fine for 4 years allready

Hmm... yea ill have to look further into mine and def re weld that mount... on your road bike with the fatty.. how much clearance do you have.. about 1/2 inch?

i have a pic from my 94 ,you can see the pipe run to high here..
its  taken when i re-entered the mx-world 4 years ago.
fork guards were on its way ,if you notice and ask  :wink:

the other pic shows the clearance on my fatty /tank ,
sure its 1/2 an inch ,finger will fit between,m
