I had the chance to race in the 40th anniversary in 2007....still trying to figure out how the Baja 1000 ends up being nearly 1300 miles !?!

I am sure the bike would do great ( especially with one of Stewart's motors ! ) but don't forget about race support. We used the Baja Pits service and they were great, but I am not sure if they are ready to deal with 2s anymore....nevermind what Pemex tastes like!

Picking a 'loop' race is easier, but we did it on the super cheap with only four chase vehicles and 2 pre-run bikes.

Good luck, have fun and be careful of the chupacabra!

I ran the 5 hunnie at various Baja races back in the early 90's.  As far as suspension settings?  You have to set up the suspension so that it will suit all the riders on your team.  For example when Danny Hamel and Craig Smith teamed up to race the 1995 San Felipe 250 (3 months before Danny's death) Danny weighed 220 lbs and Craig weighed 165 lbs.....You kinda have to find a happy medium.  I don't remember what pilot jet we were running but if I remember correctly we were running a 175 main.  Gearing for the 1000 was a tall 16/42 which would be good for about 115-120 mph if conditions were right.  Then there is all the basic desert stuff like 18 inch rear wheel, 3.6 gallon IMS tank with drybrake, steering dampner, bar end weights to cut down vibration, skid plate, etc....I have an old Larry Roeseler scrap book that I was making when I was younger and in that scrap book I have an article about Larry Roeseler's Baja KX500.  I'll see if I can scan it and post it up.
I once heard my buddy Bill ask Danny Hamel after a race....
"How can someone who looks like a high school band tuba player go so d**n fast on a bike?!"

K5forlife,
There's a good chance that your KX500 has WON the baja1000!  How is that for a twist.  Many of the 1990/91 used KX500 around kamloops were raced in the baja1000 by Al Perette.  He lives in Kamloops and won the +50 class a couple of times (maybe more). Cam.
