I am wondering which would be better for BITD and District 37.

I think the biggest factor is whether you want e-start.  I meet so many riders with a X model who are proud of the $2000 worth of mods to get more power to keep up with the non_X models.  That was the main reason I got an MX version 450.  Some guards, a rad overflow tank and a a larger gas tank and you are ready to race.  You do have to kick it though. Cam.

I love my e-start on my KTM. everything you listed I would be doing to both bikes. In desert racing you want reliability over power. I am putting a full FMF 4.1 with Powerbomb header, guards rad overflow GPR SUS done by Earl Shuler Racing, IMS Dry Break tank and bars and thats about it.

I have an x model :-) It has a stage one hot cam that cost $135.00 on ebay and it also has stock R model exhaust that I bought off my buddy for $50.00. My bike keeps up with r-models just fine. I have drag raced quit a few stock R-models and so far the best I have been beat was by one bike length. My buddy has an 08 klX that we have been tuning on and that bike is bad ass purpose built offroad machine.

I think It depends on what you are going to use the bike for. If you want to build a bad ass offroad wepon go for the KLX if you are going to race motocross get the kx. The klx has some very good plusses for off road use Like the 18" rear wheel.  One big pluss is the charging system. On my buddies klX we put a stock kx triple clamp and number plate with a kx exhaust. The bike looks real sporty just like the kx but then you have the E-start. We also have 8" Hid head light that we put on are bikes for night rides. https://www.bajadesigns.com/NET/C-166/SINGLE+8-INCH+RACELIGHTS. We have built a whole new bread of bike that you could not build from a kx model bike. I have taken my bike to the track and no one knew it was an X until I hit the E-start.

I'm confused BDI... you said your buddy had a KLR... as in a 650? And a KX exhaust on a KLR? Just wanted to make sure I'm on the right page.

Nope wrong page   KLX as in a 08 aluminum framed klX450r its the same thing as a crf450X. very sweet bike. I'm hoping to get some pictures up soon of his bike and all the stuff we have done. We spent some very well placed dollars. We have taken the enduro style offroad bikes that honda and kawi sells made some very serious desert assault wepons out of them.

You mean KLX450R. KLR is the dualsport.
A couple of 03 and 04 KXs, a few YZs, 3 PE 400s, a DR and a TS.

I would like to know everything that you have done to it. I am getting a full FMF 4.1 with a Powerbomb header, sus done for my weight, IMS tank, GPR, and different bars and protection for the desert.
