 gre8t job mark and all who helped. stay until the last man ran . hard to complain when you left early. maybe they knew they rung it out as far as they could this year. well i am sure they had a good reason for leaving early.  / but like they say it anit over till the fat lady sings and my ex is in fl.

So, to tie it all up, what's the actual record, who holds it, and is it an average?

Nothing is official until it is posted by the BUB people....believe me, Stewart and I are getting anxious to say the least!

The rule says....The record speed must be the average of two runs over the same piece of real estate with-in the same calendar day. The return run is the oposite direction of the down run.

The speed is an average over a full flying mile. Automatic timers at the start and end of the mile are tripped by the wheels. A computer does the math and prints out a timeslip.

The way it worked...If your down run was fastest enough then you waited a few minutes to an hour in impound. When there were four or five bikes ready to try their return runs we would be sent out to mile 8 and then race back to the original starting line.

Production Frame / Production Engine record was 112ish.
My big tail ran down at 117.529 and back at 110.516 for a record average of 114.0225

by the way, i entered the timing mile at 116.861 on the return run and coasted through at 110.....anyone guess what happened!?!

Modified Partial Streamlining Frame and Production Record
This is the class F2 racing was competing in. They had set a record of 121 last year and started to run around in magazine articles and the internet with the phrase "The World's Fastest Dirt Bike"

According to the run logs, F2 had their last runs and recorded their best times on Wednesday. a 131.829 and a 129.52. Their average and the record that stood from Wednesday to Saturday was 130.674.

We spent a couple of days calling Stewart and tuning the motor. On Saturday morning, Kevin rode a 130.418 down and then backed it up with a 132.444 for a new record of 131.413 m.p.h.

Early Sunday, we took off all the streamlining on the front of the bike a set a new Modified Frame Production Engine record of 123.4115. There was nearly a five mph headwind so the run times were pretty different.....127.523 and a 119.300.

I still want to see it in BUB print, but around my house the World's Fastest Dirt Bike is sitting under my roof and is green!

The first day we were there, Simon came up and introduced himself. He was happy that we had brought another dirt bike. He started to get more interested when I ran a 117 in MX trim.

That afternoon, Hengeveld came up to us in the pre-stage line and knew what year my K5 was. He was laughing about the crazy green and purple jerseys he wore back in the day.

The two teams started talking / checking up on each other two or three times a day. Watching each other run and listening for speed anouncements over the radio.

I can assure you they showed up and ran. These guys are racers, not internet pundits. They HATE to lose!

In my opinion, there is a line at the edge of the salt. It take footsteps not keystrokes to cross that line. Everyone that crossed it had to put out tremendous effort to just get there.



F2 Racing and Hengeveld did their best.

This year my team beat them.

Any implication that they packed up and ran diminishes our accomplishment!

Mark, you have some of the most honorable and intelligent posts and that was exactly what I was looking for.  Thank you for that.  I am truly excited for you all about everything that was accomplished and can't wait to see what you have on the table for increase.  Fuel injection maybe?  Lightened setup?  (I weigh 145ish! )

I would venture to guess either you ran out of gas or you forgot to turn the gas on on your return trip.  Been there many times. 

  I am dumbfounded, however, at the thought that they can get enough power out of a 450 fourstroke to even come close to the mighty kx5 twostroke, and they were very close.  Too close for comfort.  What in the world did they have done to that thing?

mark ran a k5 moter in that passed  the tech of a stock  class   and ran the same moter in the moddified class  same stock pipe  same stock carb etc,,  there is a lot left on the table,power wise..  the f2 guys did a great job in my opinon  with there highly moddified 4 stroke  450  that i understand may be a  495  or so cc  moter  ,,,to me the lesson out of that is a very highly moddified 4 stroke would have a hard time out running a stock good running 2 stroke of the same size

Can you run data acquisition in stock class and does the motor has to be pure stock from the factory.

now are they done running the salt for new records or building a new bike? because this is whats on the front page of there web site

I would bet the f2 guys are upping thier bike. cant see them giving up that easy. they did a good job . that is one fast 4 poke. I have a 700 kfx , but will never sell the quadzilla. k5 transplant in the future ( not stock ether ) . Mark ran on the fuel that the salt flats crew req. 110 i believe. I liked the f2 areo front end , how about a ZX14 front fairing next year Mark!!! The zx14 was built using a wind tunnel , should work good on anything.

hmmmmmmmmmmmm......next year,

the ZX has a measured coefficent of drag of ~0.603 while a busa slips in at ~0.561.

first off.....the Cd scale is from zero to one. I believe anything below 0.750 is purpose built.

the tough thing is that a difference in Cd of 0.042 represents a strong 7% difference!

in other words......70 hp verses 75 hp!
