Active sand feild  :? Are there inactive sand feilds if so whats the difference. Whats the definition of an active sand feild  :?
bdi, yes there are inactive sandfields, but i don't have an example for you. inactive fields have grown to the size they are and the sand supply has run out. an active sandfield is one that is currently growing and has a ready supply of sand blowing into/onto the dunes making it constantly grow in size not just growing in acreage. wyoming has plenty of dry arid ground in the southwest part of the state making it the perfect sand supply for growing Killpecker dunes. the USGS states that it is the largest "living" dune system in the USA. i have not gotten to ride these dunes but i hope to this next summer. i've seen these dunes and they are HUGE. 10,500 acres. i don't think that they are nearly as tall as st. anthony though, just alot more acres to ride on. it's so big that the article on duneguide.com about killpecker states that they recommend utilizing a GPS to navigate with due to the size of the dunes.  MADDOGGY

would be better worded as actively forming dunes. i would also consider migrating dunes active too. 10,500 acres is hardly HUGE, its a little bigger than dumont. dunes like little sahara, UT 60,000 acres are BIG but HUGE should be something like glamis 150,000 acres. i looked at dune guide it states nothing about using a GPS to navigate the dunes. they do give GPS coordinates to find the dunes. link to dune guide/ killpecker

Let me get this right.  You bought a TERYX  to go 4 wheel'n but you have more fun 4 by 4'n the truck and trailer.  I can poke fun at you because I've been stuck before.  My brother and I got permission to cut fire wood from bulldozed trees near a bridge construction site.  It was real sandy.  We filled the truck and trailer with wood and got stuck in the sand. Unloaded half of the wood, got unstuck, reloaded the wood. Made it about 60 feet and got stuck again.  Unloaded half the wood, got unstuck, drove home unloaded the half load of wood.  Drove back to get the other half of the wood and someone had stolen it.
Hang in there, we'll watch for your next report.

Little Sahara Okla. moves a foot North each year. They built a new Northside perimeter fence because the old one was buried and people were driving past the boundary onto private property.

Well after 10 days and 2200 miles we finally it made to the dunes! We arrived the St. Anthony Dunes in Idaho. We took a short ride late this afternoon and are staying the next three nights at a great RV park, called Sandhill Resort right on the edge of the dunes. No cell phone , but my at&t air card is finally working!

I live 80 miles south of st anthony. Grew up riding there. Started on a Husky 250 MAG. I need a break from work, would like to come up and meet you, and try out the new top end on my KX500. Maybe make a run to choke cherry. If you don't mind email me at 2cjpolatis@gmail.com

Thanks for coming up to meet us Chris! ID KX500

We Just rode for 2 1/2 days at St. Anthony's and I got to tell you guys Glamis aint got nothing on St Anthony dunes! They reminded me of being back in the Alps in Europe! They are so tall you can't take any picture and get feel for their size! They are also a bit scary because most of the bowls have lava at the bottom. You don't want to do any blind jumping into or over anything unless you have looked first!

Just a few pic's for now...............

Next on to Oregon!

Alan :-D

Nice meeting you and Barb. Hope you enjoyed Idaho. I love it for the diverse dirt biking, sand, desert, and mountains. I'm headed to my favorite high mountain lake Sunday. Have fun in Oregon. Love the pictures.  ID KX500

Hey, Alan what is the difference in sand compared to Little Sahara Okla.?
St. Anthony sand is darker in color due to the high Lava content. It was very dry and it sucks up every bit of power you can dish out!

We rode the Oregon Dunes today for the first time. It is very beautiful to be on the coast in the dunes next to the Pacific! Lots of large rolling dunes down the center of the riding area maybe 100 footers and they go on for miles. It is just down right cold riding along the waters edge.

The sand seems dry to the touch but it has gobs of traction............
