New KX500 guy on three wheels
« on: May 12, 2008, 05:33:29 AM »
I am not much on introductions so this will be short. I recently bought a 1986 kawasaki tecate three wheeler and the 250 needs more grunt. So i bought a 87 kx500 powerplant to install.  :-D

this will be my second big bore trike and I will posting pics soon. Here is my 1st big bore trike. it is a 86 250r with a 87 engine. Port work was done by eric gorr and it rocks. I hope the KXT500 out runs the ATC500 but only time will tell.

Have you read the article where the tecate bottom end gets mated upto a KX500 cylinder?

http://www.tecateconnection.com/ProjectKX500.htm

Not sure how it turned out yet but its an interesting project anyway.
Welcome in, regards Scott.

i will check that out. most conversions like that end up killing the tranny or the clutch cant keep up. I will use the whole KX5 in there :)

I've done the same conversion you're starting on.
It's quite simple, the hardest part is fitting a pipe.  I started with a FTZ drag pipe but hated having it hung out in harms way.  I'm in the process of fitting a KX500 FMF pipe now (if I ever get some time).

Good Luck!!

Awesome! It must be fun trying to keep the front end down on those things.
Rock it 'til the wheels fall off!

Nice conversion!!! fitting the pipe is always tough on conversions.

What year pipe are you using for the conversion?

Where did you have the swinger extended at? Will they do another?

I HAD AN ATC JUST LIKE THAT!!!  Custom built pipe and everything.  4th gear wheelies up the dunes!  Awesome, welcome.

I'd like to do the same thing again, but to a fourtrax instead of the trike.

The pipe is a 88-04 model.

The swingarm was welded up by a friend using 10" off of the rear of the KX500 swingarm for the extension and then welding 1/2" thick plate on the top and bottom.  He won't do anymore (said it was too much of a pain for the welder he uses).

I would imagine any machine shop would be able to extend one if you made sure they get it straight and true.
