I was a fat guy but lost 20 lbs. over the last 3 months. The way I did it was to cut the meal size in half and now I eat 4 meals a day instead of 3 meals with snacking in between. No snacking and 1 Mountain Dew a week instead of 3 or 5 a day. Cut WAAAY back on the beer also. My main incentive was I could not fit into the new XXlarge body armor I bought. Still need to lose 15 lbs. I'm 6 foot tall and should weight in at 210/215.
