What was your first bike?
« on: February 09, 2008, 04:10:02 AM »
My first bike was a Harley Davidson 90.  My dad bought it for me new at a motorcycle show. I just about fainted I was so surprised.  I was 11.  A friend had one and I had ridden it a couple of times.  Well that bike was the bigest POS you could amagine.  It was made my Minarelli and broke everytime I rode it. Fast though, on pavement it would dust off all of my friends minibikes.  I MX raced it a few weekends later.  It had gotten water in the gas so would barely run - I had to push it up the main jump each lap and was the laughing stock of the crowd. My dad must have been embarased because I got a used honda SL70 a few weeks later. That was a good bike. Cam.

1970 Honda trail 70.  3-speed semi automatic.  Fold down handlebars. Gas tank under a very large seat.  Rode it almost every weekend in the desert for 2 years.  Absolutely bulletproof.  Never even changed the plug.

I traded a yard cart for a yz enduro 80 when I was in jr. high. I lived in town with nowhere to hit the dirt, so I rode the streets. The front wheel was bent so bad it was a challenge to ride over like 20 mph. It had no kickstarter and had to be choked while pushing to start. The back tire was smooth as a racing slick, and would barely spin the tire on wet grass, so I never got accused of property damage. The best memory of that bike was riding it to footbal practice on the other side of town. I would trail my best friend, who was our middle linebacker, to practice and back wearing all of our football equipment. It was kinda safe since we were wearing helmets and pads, and could only go 10-15 mph, but I doubt any kids would get away with it today. :-D :-D

Mine was a 70's Honda QA50, I think I was around 7 or 8. 3spd auto trans and it was the best bike within 100 yds of my house. (Of course I did'nt have any neighbors within 300 yds of my house!!!!) I rode the wheels off that bike and my mom was the first person to do a wheelie on it, she never rode it after that. Learned the definition of neutral drop that day. Graduated from that to a 73 lt1 100cc Yamaha. (yep the purple one) Then after about 2 yrs went to a 76 DT400 and KX 420. Kept the 400 and put all the lights back on it and rode it on the street for a couple years. The KX gave me a few bruises to my ego and other parts. I rode alot of my friends bikes back then too, like an 81 yz125 that was ported and flow benched with aftermarket suspension (don't recall what suspension it was though.) A 76 yz 125 with the steel tank. A few different CR's in 125, 250, 480 and 500. Also had a 78 Honda CX500 that I rode back and fourth to college after the DT.  I now have the KX500 and a Goldwing.

85 Zooki DS80.  I don't remember much nowadays, but I do remember that as long as I can remember I wanted a dirtbike.  I would beg my parents like crazy... "No!"  Then I got the DS as a surprise one day.  I was just getting to be too big for it, but it was a great bike to learn on.  The motor was like a tank, small bike but still a 5 speed.

After that, I was on my own.  I was 17 when I saved up enough for a 83 RM 250.  It's definately in my blood.

My first bike was a Cushman Super Eagle. I was twelve or thirteen and so happy just to have any type of motorcycle. That thing was next to impossible to start, always had old and new problems.  I used to ride it for an hour and work on it for two. It weighed about five times what I did and had about three horsepower on a good day.  When I dumped it, the exhaust would burn my leg . Two speed, hand shift, yep the good old days. That thing was a super turd, but I loved it just the same. My Dad worked for Holsum bread in the sixties, he talked the fleet painter into donating some paint, so the Cushman was painted orange and blue just like a Holsum bread truck.  Thanks for the topic, I almost forgot about that old Cushman.
Spring is here and the Mighty 500 wants to ride.
