street legal 500?
« on: December 06, 2007, 11:46:54 AM »
hello everyone,  i bought my 500 pretty recently and the previous owner put a enduro kit on it and got it plated.  the sticker is from 2002.  I thought that you couldnt put 2 strokes on the road these days.  Anyways I thought someone out there might know how to go about getting it regestered.  by the way this would have to be accomlished in california. would greatly appreciate any tips on how to do this.

getting registration and plates for a two stroke is a snap here in Arizona. Heck, you can even get plates on a Banshee ATV and legally drive it on the streets. I dont know how it would transfer to another state though, since off road bikes here are titled as ATV's for registration purposes. I am sure there are other states that allow registration of ATV's, so transfer to those states would be easier. But to any state that doesnt allow ATV's and dirt bikes on the street, it would be a real challenge.

in january oregon is changing there laws on licensing bikes for the street. this is after pressure from the federal government to "aid in the war on terrorism.

KTM had to completely change the 2008 bikes to get a few of them street legal. for now on bikes in OR and WA have to be sold with a plate from the dealer and be designated for steet use by the factory to make it to the street. 2008 offroad and race only bikes will have to have emissions too... but this was all decided years ago...

i have been talking to everyone i know for the last few years and no one i know can get around this.

My KX500 is plated too. I had it plated back in 1999 before Washington changed the rules on us. Now it would not be possible to get a plate for it. I suspect if I ever sell the bike that the new owner will lose the plate. But why would I sell such a wonderful bike? Never happen.

I heard about that apparently they uncovered a terrorist plot to get a bunch of dirt bikes registered and ride them all around and annoy the hell out of everyone. Thank God the govrnment saved us again.
