KX500 running problems
« on: November 23, 2007, 12:45:31 AM »
Hello,

I've had problems with idling, now my problem is a bit different. When I ride my kx500 with the choke off, it cuts out, runs very ruff and wants to die. Then I pull the choke up, the bike seems to run fine or a lot better.
I've to the point of just replacing the carb with a different one. If replacing is my only option. What all years interchange with the 1989 model PWK V461DB01?

Thank You,

Sounds to me like you simply have a partially plugged pilot jet.

Are you talking about the main jet, that is between the floats?

Sorry for my lack of knowledge

Cleaning the Carb would be my choice, but I would also check the compression as well.  A two cycle engine can have these same symptoms when low on compression.

What should the cylinder compression be for a 1989 model?
I'm taking out the main pilot jet now.

does it run ok though? i personally dont like my 2 stroke to idle. but to your problem, check what everyone else has said but you might want to also try a new spark plug and check your oil fuel mix.

Yes, the bike runs great with the choke on, just when the choke is off it cuts out and dies. I'm having a local bike shop look at it now. He says its a main pilot jet. I will get the bike back this friday. Thanks for all the sugestions.

Well, my bike is finally fixed and running great (I took it for a ride today). The pilot jet was the problem, they replaced the 60 jet with a 65..... I do need now to replace a worn intake boot real soon. Anyway thanks for all the info. Great web site!
