The 1986 KX500 stator and flywheel can be used on the 89-04 KX500.
The 1986 KX250 Stator and flywheel is same as 1986 KX500
The 1984-1987 Tecate 3 wheelers and 1987-88 Tecate 4 have lights and have a stator and flywheel that can be used on 1986 KX250
Therefore, the Tecate stator with lighting coil and flywheel can be purchased new for around $250 and be used on 89-04 KX500

The tecate flywheel is quite hefty.

There is thread on here were a guy was trying to do this and posted an old magazine article about the Baja 1000 KX500 from the 80's that had a Tecate stator and flywheel

Maybe I'm not on the right track and you guys want 1000 watts of power and monster spot lights on the front of your KX.

The Tecate lighting stator is weaker than the moose lighting stator for $69.  Great research though.

I have that little coil on my 500. I used it to run a whip light and other little lights on my sand bike. I also had the the e-line coil on the bike at the same time that ran two 6" lights off the front. Boy I really thought I was s**tting in high cotten but now that I own a bike with half the wattage, half the weight worth of crap, twice the light and twice the dependability I realize how poorly designed my lighting was. I don't mean to speak for everyone but I think what we wan't is a 100 watt system that puts out a 200 watts of light even when the bike is at idle. that is what we are working on and the point of this whole post.

I have an E-Line set-up with a new stator winding that i've yet to install. Besides the weight...what is the general negative consensous with using the E-Line set-up??

It's going into my '86 Tecate KXT 500 project and will power the stock headlite and taillite only...no tru serious nite running.

These were the predicessors to the eline set up. My goal is to have something that fits behind the stock mag and mag cover. Something that works right. That is a very cool article thanks for posting it.
what about the electrix brand from the UK?,they do lighting stators for the 500's and 250's,i really want lights on my kx's why let night time stop the fun!!

I bet that is a mistake. If it's not I may be interested. These places get the 250 & 500 kxs mixed up all the time.

I'm going with mistake. If it's not a mistake they are selling the little add on coil that goes on the stock stator plate. If you notice they don't mention anything about wattage.

The KX250 and early 86-89 KX500 flywheels look similar but they are different.  Here is a couple pics of nos 86-89 KX500 flywheel on the left and nos 86 KX250 flywheel on the right.  The KX500 has bigger rivets holding the hub to the flywheel, also when both flywheels have the keyway cutout at the 12 o'clock position the timing marks on the flywheels are at much different positions as the red marks show in the pic.  Kawasaki also gives diff part no's between the two.

For riding in the dunes I just keep it simple and run the later 90-04 ignition with 65w aftermarket lighting coil that bolts on the factory stator plate on the K5. Everything else is either to much $$ or too much headache for my tastes.

The Electrix UK coils are the same add on the Moose and electrosport sell.  The ratings vary because some are at peak rpm and others are what you might have at an idle or the 2 are averaged to come up with a totally different number getting more people excited about lighting possibilties for the K5.  Simply, there is no product on the market that makes enough power to do what we want to do, period.  We are wasting a lot of time talking about this coil here and that coil there. The Eline was junk and they are not produced anymore, end of story.  After a lot of research and phone calls and emails  we have the start of a solution that is in the works right now.  Stewart and I, with some awesome research from BDI aka Brian,  Penton is going to make an ignition system to do what we want. Not everything, but a start.  We do not need 200 watts. With the advances in technology we can run 4 times the light with half the juice thanks to HID. That is what we are working on. We will keep you posted as new info comes about as this is a highly sought after upgrade.

I'm very happy that everyone is trying to get some good quality coils made. I miss having a bike with lights but I'll never give up the K5. It's just too much fun and nothing compares to it. I'm sure I speak for most if not all of this forums members. Thank you guys for making things happen and helping out when needed.
