KX500 Steering Stabilizers

I just goy my Scotts catalog, and I'm a little confused about compatibiliy with standard crossbar style handlegbars. Do any of you know if you can run standard Renthal handlebars with Scotts steering dampers? Scotts actually sells a Renthal handlebar with a "bowed" brace so as to clear the damper unit. all the pictures in the catalog are all of bikes with Pro Taper style bars. Thanks,

Alan, which version do you have? (bolt on, or weld on)? Did you have to cut the crossbar pad for clearence?

The mount is the weld on type and no we did not cut the cross bar. Let me see if I can find a better detail and post it for you! If you need more detail let me know I will take more pic's. Not the damper is mounted backwards on the bars.

Looking at it I know we welded something, but I can't remember what it was!

  Scotts told me weld on only for my 04' K5.  I bought their bar mount and cones and run pro taper bars.  So far I am pleased with the bars and how the cones make it feel.  I don't have the damper on yet.  I have a friend that is going to tig weld mine when he gets back from school.  He is being trained on how to make molds to produce carbon fiber air plane parts.  He'll be back at the end of this month.
  My weld on post had to be cut to size for length.  I used a small pipe cutter.  It did mash the I.D. of the hole but a fine rat tail file fixed it up no problem.  On the frame side it had to be hammer/bent and ground to fit.  Today I will use paint stripper to remove the paint where the weld will take place.  Pic's if you want to check it out so far.

Thanks for the pics and input guys! The only issue I am thinking I will have, is on all my Kawis' I like to flip the offest bar posts around and foreward. This looks like it will put the steering damper in the wrong position for the "bolt in" version. I am thinking I should get the weld on version, that way I can put the post standoff exactly where I need it.

The reverse position works exactly the same as it would in the other position. Actually we called Scotts and the recommended mounting it that way!

After getting jerked around by GPR, I opted to purchase the Scotts unit, and a VERY good call on my part. I had to wait over 2 weeks to be able to purchase one as a dealer, but all was worth the wait!!! I set up the damper per instructions. I had my forks set flush to the triple tree, and after many high speed runs, I needed to go 3 clicks firmer in dampening to totally rid the headshake. I also must comment adding a steering stabilizer greatly minimises REAR wheel swapping blitzing whoops also! Now a few days later the REAL test: I slid my forks up so I have 5/16" of fork above the top clamp. This previously would cause MAJOR headshake on rough straights. To my absolute JOY, I needed 2 more clicks to totally rid my 5 of headshake. I can now hold my 5 WO and have simply a light grip on the bars. I got ZERO arm pump my last day of riding! I am heading up to our local MX track Wed. for the final call, which I am confident will be a whole new world of enjoyment on my 500. Heres a few pics:

What "rubber" ??
I work for a machine shop that also has a full blown weld/fabrication shop. They TIG welded my bracket, which only exerts minimal heat.

It's some kind of seal at the top of the steering stem.  I guess tig welding does not get hot like mig welding?  Not a problem for the seal?  My friend finally got his garage wired for 220 and will tig weld my damper post to the bike.  I have owned my damper for about 1 year.  I'm ready to test it out.

High frequency TIG welding is a far prefered method, especially with chromoly tubing. They only did a small amount of welding on each side of the post bracket, and the green frame paint didn't even discolor! The only thing to remember: ALWAYS disconnect your CDI box connections when TIG welding anything on your frame. TIG's ultra high frequencies can "zap" and fry your CDI box very easily.

I went to put my damper on (I own this company www.motosportz.com) but my vintage 87 has the bar mounts at an angle to the triple so it is going to take a little rethink.

I welded my post on with a stick welder and a stainless rod that burned at a low amperage. I got to say that I love my scotts.
