Suzuki Bringing back the RM125 and RM250 for 2018?
« on: October 24, 2016, 04:07:01 AM »
Dirt Rider keeps putting this out there.  It was in this article:

http://www.dirtrider.com/2006-suzuki-rm125-project-bike-review

And in the new issue's 2017 RMZ 450 test.  Anybody heard anything about it?

I'm guessing if it's true then Suzuki is desperate and figures it can't hurt to try.

It would be an interesting move if Suzuki did start making 125/250's again. I think they would greatly benefit from the 2 stroke movement that seems to be going on now. I personally ride a 2012 RM-Z450, and while I love it, and it's a great bike, they are really lacking in development. I see big changes coming soon from Suzuki.

Dirt Rider did say that there are big changes coming for the four strokes in 2018 as well.  It will be a big year for them.  I hope Kawasaki is watching and wants to follow their lead.  It would be nice to have a new green two stroke in my garage.   :-D

Yeah, I really believe that they're going to undergo quite a few changes in the next coming year or two. KTM has just come and slaughtered everybody with their 250/300 2 stroke sales (which, they're awesome bikes, no contest about it). The green two strokes...we can only dream.  :-D

Amen.  I worry about parts availability on my trusty old two strokes going forward.  Having a newer bike you wouldn't have to worry so much about it.

Did you hear that the KX125 would be a re-issue of the 2005, a updated 2005, or a version of the four stroke?  I think my money's on the re-issue, but an updated or all new one would be cool too.

Suzuki building two strokes again might help send a message! Hopefully it won't be a warmed over 2008 model which was the last year for the Suzuki RM250's. If they truly want to compete for off-road I think they need to make a yellow KTM. 300cc or bigger, electric starter, kick stand, headlight, spring forks...etc. The vast majority of the market is off-road not MX or SX. Building a large selection of good performing off-road machines is why KTM has dominated the market in recent years! One of the best bikes I ever owned was a "76" Suzuki RM370.

I brought that possibility up to Suzuki when I talked to them at the AIM expo, they do not have any real plans right now to introduce a new 2 stroke.

I brought that possibility up to Suzuki when I talked to them at the AIM expo, they do not have any real plans right now to introduce a new 2 stroke.

I don't put much trust in what the people at the shows or dealers say. They don't seem to know what is going on from the times I have asked about new products. Whether the reason is keeping it secret so the sales of the old stock does not stop or they truly do not know the result is the same.
I am looking to upgrade my boat electronics and talked to a number of 'reps' that thought I should 'buy now' and nothing else new was going to happen. I called the factory and after pushing a 'tech' person about 'improved products' coming out he said, "Wait until January before you buy".
My 2012 VStrom 1000 was the same way, "Nothing new planned" though I like my '12 better than the new ones anyway.
The tech is for sure there now to bring a 'clean' 2 popper, both street or off road to the market. It is all about whether they think it will sell and be worth the effort. KTM sales kicking their butt's will help them make the decision! Once they take the step their manufacturing costs will be less than the 4 strokes.
I look to snowmobiles and outboards for something to salivate over. Stock 600's that put out 100 HP? Ohhh yeah... Not sure I would do the off road version as I am cutting back on the HiPo stuff I own but it would be tempting. Particularly if it had electric start!

The original rumor came from Dirt Rider magazine. They seemed pretty convinced that it was going to happen. I think you are spot on about reps and dealers. They don't want to give away a secret or hamper existing model sales.

Cernics had a petition at Lorettas I think for a new rm125

McGrath had a kx350 on his Insta gram asking Kawasaki  to give us what we want.

My local Ktm  dealer can't keep 300s  in stock and they are considering beta just so they can get more 300  two strokes.

2 strokes are hot and something has got to give. 10 years of 4 stroke coolaid was too much for me.
I won't  buy another new Bike unless it's  an easy to ride mx 2 stroke. I don't want to Pay  a premium for a ktm, as the goodies don't make me faster.

I've got  two 3 year olds to buy bikes for as they get older. No way am I going to buy 4 strokes that I can't even work on. I'll rebuild old bikes if I have to.
