Looking too do a KX500AF need help
« on: July 30, 2016, 03:57:43 PM »
Hello. So I am looking to swap my 1986 kx500 engine into a kx aluminium. So first off which is the best frame. I have a good local used motorcycle dealer that could probably help me locate a frame. I see there needs to be a lot of things custom build like the y piece or can I modify the one on the donor frame? Also I do have a really good welder who can weld for me. So could someone just outline the conversion. Like the main things? Thanks for any help.

you want the best go 16 450 or 17 , and if you are feeling rich go 17 kx250f , the older alloys frame are ok but you need different off set clamps and longer pull rods on link to bring them up to par in the handling stakes plus you must make sure the frame tube mods are done very good as there been a few breakages for what ever reasons myself i would do a kx250 04 2t or something along them lines as they handle good and are easier to do. there no advantage in alloy frames , i would use a steel frame and update the suspension and brakes etc.

So far it's been done with ktm, yz250, and  I did a Rm250.
I pick my favorite handling steel framed bike and went for it. Steel is easier to build and easier to work on.
Plus you can put newer forks and shocks on anything.
If you gotta go aluminum the is a ton of info here and
Some guys making parts you may need to make it easier.
Just go at it and post your progress. I'm sure the guys on here can advise you along the way too.

So I should swap it into a newer steel frame instead of an aluminium frame? And are you talking about a 2017 and 2016 kx(f?)450?

Idk. Just figure what you are willing to spend and go for it. I chose an older chassis that I liked and it worked out.  If money was no object I'd do a 2016 or newer ktm frame. Nothing wrong with aluminum if you are willing to do and spend what it takes. Just do your homework on what needs done. The info is all here somewhere.
What chassis are you used to/do you like?  Look into it and go for it.
