Steering stem
« on: August 16, 2015, 10:36:33 AM »
Hi will obtain a set of kx450 trippleclamps soon, and make a new steering stem to fit my kx500 for some upgraded front end :-)
What type of material do you recomend ?
Ordering the emig set is a hassle with toll fees and such, so not an option... And the kx500 98-04 clamps seem very elusive...

Just use the original 500 one. Its steel all you do is just get a machine shop to build up the area that presses into the clamps and machine it down to fit the 450 clamps. No need in wasting 200 bucks for the emig one anyway only nice thing I got from them was the sleeve for the top clamp because the 500 stem is smaller at the top clamp.

Bought a kx450f-12 trippleclamp set and had one kx125-90 set pressed out the stem of both of them...
Length is roughly the same, but where it counts, the bottom end of the stem the 1990 stem is 30,10 mm and the 450-2012 is 30,20 mm, so reusing the one from the 125 doesn´t seem like an option. Also thought about reusing the stem from the 450 and turn it down in the lathe, but not enough material to cut the new threads it seems.
Well gonna look into a machineshop to fix me up with a new stem and a bushing for the top clamp...

what I said it has to be welded up and machined back down to the correct size. not that big of a deal
