Cant start kx 100
« on: August 04, 2015, 04:10:09 PM »
hi everyone I got my first bike its a 2001 kx 100. guy said it needed top end re done. he bomb started it to show me it runs. brought it home, cant get it to start. took the plug out put my thumb over the hole, compression feels good. fresh fuel, coolant, oil, plug. only thing I didn't do is clean air filter. any body have similar issue. or should I just rebuild the top end for something to do.

Hi Tabatha and welcome to the forum.
When you say he bomb started it do you mean that he push started it?

My guess is too low compression ... But could be carb and reed issues as well...

Yeah... Once they start loosing compression they can become very hard to start.
Feeling the compression isn't good enough.
Get a compression gauge and check it.
If you don't have a compression gauge you can usually rent one at a auto parts store.
Bring your spark plug with you so they can make sure they have the correct size.

if the guy said it will need a new top en you probably should go for a new top end, however a fresh clean airfilter will probably help, and also you should make sure that fuel tap is turned on  :-D i have had several situations where bikes were hard to start. but it turned out to be the fuel tap in the off position

thank you very much I was planning on ordering reeds anyways. and ill call around and see if I can get my hands on a compression gauge. i bought a spark plug yesterday they helped me out with that already, wanted to be on the safe side since i new the one on the bike wasn't brand new or in the greatest shape. lol  :-D thanks already made sure the fuel tap was on lol ive seen lots of people do that one too lol.

yup...I myself would take the motor right outa the frame and put on the bench, then pull the head and cylinder right off, it doesn't take long to do at all...and you'll know right away if it's in need of a top end...and from the sounds of it, it does.
Then you can go through everything, and clean all the KIPS components...and be sure everything looks good and that nothing needs replacing.
Who knows...maybe you'll get lucky, and just need to re-ring it...but that's a long reach.
Excuse me, ma'am...but you've got extremely nice legs!!!...what time do they open???                                                                                                               https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8tCgN3aryQ

I would recommend buying a service manual or Clymer manual.  They are readily available on eBay and are really great references.  Also, YouTube is a great reference as well.  Good luck!

whoever you chose to do the replating on the cylinder, just tell them you'll be needing a piston kit to go with it....most replating places sell piston kits, so you'll be good to go.
