New Green Kool-Aid Drinker
« on: May 15, 2015, 08:51:01 AM »
Hey guys,

Picked up a very nice original owner 2003 last night from CL, came with tons of spares and extras. Acme Suspension, GPR, Shark Fin,Pro circuit, Dry break IMS and dump can, Zipty axle, 18/21 excel rims, etc. Here is a picture from earlier, needs a good cleaning since it has been sitting for a while. I took all the d**n stickers off, now it looks much better

I am going to plate it, luckily its a cake walk in AZ. I do have a couple questions for you guys though

1. The timing has been advanced to run on race gas, I plan to run 91. I have not looked at the stator plate yet, is there only one mark to line up for OEM timing?

2. Also with the race gas I am sure the jetting is a bit off, luckily the bike came with a just about every pilot, main, needle combo there is. What would be a good base line for 2000ft?

Other than that I think it should be good, I'll probably do a wossner top end in the very near future just for peace of mind. Here is my stash of spares, those are the OEM polished wheels that were new take offs :)

And a bonus picture of my neighbors 90 that we just got done a 1mm wossner and general overall revamp.

I see you made it over here  :-D Don't know what you paid for that thing but a ims dump can set up is a awesome score if you plan on racing it. If not your best off getting a tank adapter to put a regular screw on top. and all of those extra parts and a set of wheels  :-o

Yeah I'll probably switch it out to a regular setup, I have a regular aluminum screw on piece from my 650r that has been sitting around for years.

I may have to keep the dry break though, just because its cool :-D

They are cool but only in a race situation, nothing worse than trying to fill a dry brake with a regular can though

It was definitely a good find, listed in computer parts no less. I'm not sure where he came up with the price, but it worked for me :-o

1. There are 3 marks.
Be sure it's in the middle position.

2.  Start at 52-55 pilot, 165-168 main, needle on the middle position, 1.5 turns.
Remember, air temp and engine condition will have a big effect on jetting.
Do throttle chops to dial in your main.

The four stroke engine: That's one stroke for producing power and three for wearing the engine out.

Thanks for the info, I pulled the carb off last night and it had a 168m and 50p. Ill check out what needle and clip position today, I think I'll go with a 52p first. Luckily it came with a brand new br8eg, the one in the bike is a beautiful chocolate milk 8-)

Got my airbox and carb spotless, coolant fushed, ignition retimed, and have been giving the whole bike a good cleaning. Ordered some new reeds, DT-1 air filter, and top end gasket kit. The cylinder and piston look great, only a small amount of carbon on the PV that easily scrapes off with a finger nail.

One question about that though, the center flapper seems unusually loose to me. I can "jiggle" it with my finger back and forth a small amount. Is this the normal play in the pin?

Hopefully my parts get here early in the week so I can race that pesky XR650R :-D

:-o :-o sweet piece, I need to get me a mid 90's husky 250, my 00 cr125 and 96 wxe360 get lonely being the only huskies in the garage. Been throwing the idea around at making my 125 a street eater.  I have some pictures of the two somewhere i'll share them when I find them

S38B38,

The center valve Pins are worn & possibly the barrel valves (the grooves center pins ride in) too. It will take away a lot of top end rev, but if you don't rev the bike, leave as is...you can buy the pins & replace (or remove & invert) but the valves are quite pricey & don't waste your time on a used set, as they are probably worn as much if not more than your current set. One other thing to check is the bushings at the base gasket surface, they need to hold the barrel valves up in the cylinder, if they don't, even new valves will have play.

Hope this helps,

DoldGuy

Thank you for the info, I am going to leave it be for now and do further investigation when
I do a top end.

Finally got the air filter today, just about ready to fire the beast up :-)

I did notice a hairline crack on the Scott's weld on mount, I think the issue was he never cleaned/greased the pin and it would bind. A few seconds with the TIG and it's good to go, you guys with weld on mounts might want to double check

Got her all buttoned up last night, then refueled in about 5 seconds today. 3 priming kicks and one good boot from the top and it lit.

Runs like an absolute beast, my brothers words after riding it "this thing is nuts, just bonkers"  :-D
