When did age & wear hit you?
« on: February 07, 2015, 12:43:57 PM »
When did you get old & really start to "feel" the wear & tear on your body?
I'm 38 & my body has has kinda gone in the sheet'r. I feel like a crybaby ,38, even asking this, but I'm hoping it's just the age & maybe some of you older Gents' have some input or tips on improving your physical comfort with age. I eat ibuprofen pretty regular & it does seem to help some but I know it's not the greatest for your liver. Like the wine as well  :-D
Smoother lines & not pushing as hard would probably be wise. I guess it's me worrying every time my knee starts acting up or my hip clicks or my back... that at some point I'll be relegated to road rides only or no rides. How do I extend my favorite pastime?

Unfortunately it doesn't get much better, but you can still have a lot of fun. I would highly recommend stretching daily.  As you get older, you lose a lot of flexibility.  Tight muscles pull too tightly on tendons and joints.  This leads to knee pain, etc. Also, don't be afraid to try physical therapy for chronic aches. I'm currently seeing a PT to work on my lower back, and it's already a lot better after a couple of visits.  Oh, and as much as it sucks, you need to exercise regularly. Nothing fancy, a 30 minutes walk a couple of times a week will do.

Out for a quick check out ride without gear - I endowed.  On the ride the the next day I felt like an old lady.  3rd time falling in deep sand, my 70 yo bud took my bike & told me to ride his out ! lol
He did have a rear tire fitted to the front (laced up rear rim) of his XR650R for hi floatation...  :-

Im almost 47. Im actually holding up pretty good! Ive raced enduros for 30 years now, not as much in recent years though. I ve been banged up over the years but I really dont feel any worse than I did when I was in my 20s. My speed is more or less still there and I still look for nasty challenging stuff to ride, probably more than when I was young! Never smoked or drank heavily and I never really worked out but started this year, about 20-30 minutes a day and Ive changed my diet some. My blood pressure has gone down and Ive been losing weight. I do have 2 bad knees with some arthritis in them. It seems like when I dont ride and sit around my body starts aching so I try to ride as much as possible.

Some good points for sure. I struggle with taking the me time , I need to get a routine down. The reminders help, still stuck in my 20 year old mindset of go like stink & you don't need to do anything for your body.

I was doing pretty regular lower back exercise just laying the floor watching tv , then we got a dog who wants to play so I haven't been laying on the floor. Gotta take the floor back & add some leg stretching to the mix. Icey hot is my friend.

Being on cement floors on my feet all day for the last 15 years is a factor for sure, my shoes fold up like bananas about every 3 months. No serious crashes other than a broken thumb  , thank goodness.

My diet is actually one of my better areas, I love food, good food , fruits veggies. My wife has actually gotten mad for me eating her diet foods. Smoked for 7 years in my youth, smoke free for the last 16 or so though. Could cutback on the wine for sure, but don't really do the binge drinking thing.

Definitely should be riding more , as much for the mental benefits. Hope I can still ride in my 70's d**n, I've heard old guys have the finesse

Luckily I'm on my feet all day at work (vineyard managment and wine maker actually the only employee) and walk an average of 2 to three miles a day at work but I'm still over weight and smoke. Don't drink to often due to gout. Guess its time for more excise n healthier eating habits. Love good for ya foods just to much of em

The family doctor told my father that it's not what you do as you get older that will hurt you.  It's what you stop doing.  You stop moving and doing active things, and get more and more sedentary.

Of course I took that to mean I needed to keep riding at all costs.   :-D

No doubt , that was the problem I'd eat the diet goods & every thing else too. Without the munchies even

Running a winery sounds like 'dream' job material. Miss being outside

Well.... lets see...
Tuberculosis at 4... jacked up my lungs
Broke my right collar bone the same year.
Knee started giving me trouble at 14..... had surgery on it at 19.
Large herniated disc at 30.
Broke my left collar bone and ribs at 47.
Asthma at 49.
Strained both big toes prepping for a tough mudder at 50.
At 52 I still ride like Bower... get in my way and I'll run you over cause I can't see and don't have the reflexes to stop if I did...
But I still ride  :-D

Like Sandblaster, at 43yo I've had multiple injuries over the years....
my right shoulder was dislocated 17 times over 3 years before I finally had it fixed in March '94...
I had a collapsed lung in May '94...
I shot my right knee with a 3 1/2" spike from a nail gun in Aug '94...yeah, '94 wasn't a fun year...
Nov '99 I cracked my skull vertically across my right eye socket and almost died...
Feb '01 I blew my L4 and L5 discs simultaneously...
I was born with mono-articulate arthritis in my right ankle...
and almost exactly a year ago, I had major surgery on my stomach for a massive hernia...this is actually still bothering me from the scar tissue, I have an 11" scar from just under my belly button to just under my chest...but the hernia IS fixed.

80% of what I eat is plant based, with the occasional fresh tuna steak, turkey, shellfish, and whole foods. I don't eat anything from a can or a box....I make my own salad dressings/marinades.
I do drink periodically...2-4 times a week...I think I'd go postal if I didn't.
I've always kept in good shape by lifting weights almost daily since I was 10ish...and even with all the injuries I've had, I still feel pretty d**n good.

Excuse me, ma'am...but you've got extremely nice legs!!!...what time do they open???                                                                                                               https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8tCgN3aryQ

That pics cool Foxx, always nice to put a face to the name. I gotta ask though, did the cracked skull involve a frying pan?  :-D No really though I'd be interested in the entirety of that story.

And Blaster , you got a horrific list there & the strained toes almost sound like a joke compared to the rest. Glasses are in my near future , not far off on that just run it over gig.

Okay so I'm Officially a gigantic crybaby, nut up & ride. I've been graced with quite good health for years, so this ache & pain nonsense is kind of a new thing. So ingrate should be in there with crybaby too

Pain is just a way to let the weakness out  :-D
Glasses.... Forgot about those....  I only need them for comfortable reading and parts inspection  8-)
