2000 kx125 cleanup
« on: December 16, 2014, 04:13:52 PM »
I have always had a soft spot for 125 kawasakis. Growing up only bikes i ever could buy were broken ones, and most were Kx125s.
Havent ridden one since maybe '02
Always liked the 99-02 era. Sometime in 2010 i aquired a 1 owner '00 kx.
It ran, but had troubles. You could tell top end wasnt doing so well. Bike itself had alot of little things going on. Front/ rear suspension leaking, linkage kinda sticky, seat shot, plastics, levers, hardware missing, a few leaks, bent radiators, etc.
I started looking around on ebay and gathering things i needed to make it a normal bike.
I overhauled the forks/ shock, sprung for me, then in early 2011 i had a freak bike accident, and basically put dirtbikes on hold for some time.
So now its almost 4 years later and i decided to sort this out.
Here are a few pics of when i got it. Its worse than it looks.

Pulled it out of storage, brought home and tore things down.

Basically most of the chassis was wore out. Brakes, chain/ sprockets, guides, rollers, etc etc. only chassis bearing not frozen in rust were stem.

The more I tore down, the more stuff wrong i found.

I had a good bit of parts that i scrouged from 3.5 years ago, so started fixing obvious.
Piston was seizing, ring stuck, so jug went out to get bored/ replated. Will be a 139
I cleaned the motor, tore frame down and just washed it real good. Rebuilt linkage, shock bearings. Never liked the painted swingarms, so i stripped the paint off, and then put new swingarm bearings in, as well as a tm designs slider. I had found a nice nos applied racing lower triple clamp, so i cleaned all the stem stuff and pressed the new clamp on.
All greased up and working good now.
All new bearings, overhauled shock, etc etc

Hope to get it rolling around in next few days.

wow...nice find!
I'm still hoping to come across the same model too...so to have the complete line-up of 125, 250, 500 of that era.
Excuse me, ma'am...but you've got extremely nice legs!!!...what time do they open???                                                                                                               https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8tCgN3aryQ

Ive had some time off during the holidays to work on this some. Making some progres.. Slowly.
It was like christmas working on this bike again. Originally i had figured what i needed, looked around, found parts, etc. but that was almost 4 years ago, so i basically forgot most everything i had found.
Box of parts

Tons of cool stuff in there. Most everything was from eBay.
Fmf sst pipe, titanium 2 silencer
Pro circuit,
Ignition cover
Powervalve cover
Throttle tube
Rad valve
Sprockets
Tm designs chainslider/ rollers/ guide
Dyna cdi box
Applied racing,
Lower clamp
Carbon fiber frame guards
Renthal upper triple clamp
Gaskets, bearings, etc
Works connection,
Frame guards
Glide plate
Motion pro t2 throttle/ clutch cable
Braking 260mm front rotor
08 kxf front brake setup, galfer line
And more. I had forgotten about most of it.
Anyway, i started in the rear.
I had originally planned to use a 03 swingarm, so i could get the bigger rear axle, 240mm rear rotor, etc. but a few years ago i bought a 96 kx125 parts lot from a local guy, and it had a real nice wheelset with it.
I will start with that i really dont like black anything on bikes, but trying to just use stuff i have laying around.
Oem hubs, excel rims, big spokes, etc

Tires are so so.
I had cleaned up the old rear rotor. Once mounted up i soon realized it was bent pretty bad. The 96 rotor i had was just wore out. Im Sure i have one somewhere, but gave up looking, found a cheapy on ebay. This bikes' whole rear brake system ended up being mostly trash, except for ms. The rear pedal bolt was stripped, as well as threads in frame. Where clevis pin goes in pedal, it was just wore out as well.
On the rear caliper, the body was worn everywhere, where the retainers are held, pads, you name it. So I used the 96 caliper i had, in my goodie box was a nos moose( venhill) rear braided line, so used it along with some nos braking pads.
Found a new pedal/ bolt, re threaded the mount in frame
Also in goodie box was a new clevis.
It all is nice and fresh now. No slop.

In my box as well were rm fork guards, and some little spacers i had made, and a 08 kxf hose guide.

Once i remembered why i had it all arranged like it was i mounted it up.
The rm guards mounted right up, but the front bolts needed to have the little alumimum spacers mounted behind, so the side bolt would line up right.
Cleaned up the 08 kxf brake stuff, put new rotor on wheel, caliper bracket, etc.

I kinda dont like those fork guards. Would prefer the oem look.
Installed rad valve, went thru carb, cleaned, re sealed airbox, mounted subframe, fr/ rear fenders, chain rollers, guide, had a new takeoff regina roller chain off my ktm 450, so on it went too.

Im not liking all this black stuff. So far it has black wheels, a black mudflap ( was a new ufo part from the 96 parts lot) black upper clamp, black handlebars.
But im trying not to have to buy anymore stuff, and also use up things i have that i know wont be for anything else i have.
Originally i had planned to make this a 150, mainly because i just assumed the lower end was messed up, so also in my box of forgotten parts was a 38mm carb from same year 250.
But my bottem end is fine, so no 150, so i just left the 36mm on there.
looking at these pictures, man i look like a slob. Moving soon, so garage is full of kid stuff.
Pretty cramped!
Hopefully will have my cylinder back soon, im soon to run out of stuff to do on this.
Exicted to ride it. Been a while since i was on a kx125.

Nice progress.
Thanks for posting this up.

Thanks guys 8-)
Fhopkins for the right price sure.
I always liked the oem DID shoulderless wheels these had. Mine are ok, but shot tires, stuck spokes here/ there, bearings crunchy. These were ready to go somon they went.
Id sell them just like that one picture of them. No rotors, sprocket.
I have oem front rotors, and rear somewhere if you need.
I say the tires are so so, but they have life left. They are bridgestone m77/m78. Front 90%, rear about 70%.
Thanks

What year RM fork guards and what did you use for shims? To me they look like they provide more protection. Nice looking build and the mugen Honda with red motor and white frame too!

Shrub, the rm guards are from late 2000s rm/z.
Think 07 up.
The spacers are 1/4 thick aluminum, just used some round stock.
Thank on the mugen wannabe.
Here are a few pic of it

Im done with this bike until i get my cylinder back, which hopefully in a week or two.
I am trying in meantime to get some new shroud graphics made. I had found some ol factory effex graphics on some oem shrouds, i remember them being nice, but now i look at them and they are torn up pretty good. They were the ones that said kawasaki almost like oem, but underneath SR.
I will use them if i have to, but am hopefully will get a duplicate set made.

I know you said you wanted a duplicate made of the Factory Effex ones you already have...but have you looked into EVO's graphics/decals?...they have very clean OEM styles for pretty much every year and model bike out there.
these are their 125/250 decals...

these are the ones I got for my 500...

Nice Build!!! Im in the process of building a 2001 kx250, found it in a field leaning against a shed. I just couldn't let it die! Was wondering how you stripped the swingarm yours looks great. Thanks .
