The four stroke engine: That's one stroke for producing power and three for wearing the engine out.

SB, you appear very knowledgeable,  question for ya.  What is your opinion about mixing engine cases that arent an original set?  My engine builder does not recommend using mis-matched cases,  however does not dismiss the fact that you may have to in the right situation.   What are your opinions?

There are others on this site far more knowledgeable then me and I'd love to hear their opinions...
However, I do have a somewhat unique perspective so I'll share what I know...

All done  :-D

Just kidding, Some manufactures sell only sets and others split them apart.
Some people say do it some say don't do it.
My thought is that if you have a matched set that is ideal as you have no worries.. You know it will work.
That being said, I have sold many hundreds of mixed sets.
In the last 15 years I have only had one case come back because the customer said it wouldn't fit.
It was promptly sold to another customer and it worked fine.
So, if I had the option for a matched pair that would be my first choice.
But, I would gladly use a mixed set if that was within my budget or that was all I could find.

one of my good friends mixed a set of cases on his '86 500 several years ago...then rode it issue free for several years...then he sold it.

Right on, I think the guy who was building my big bore T4 motors was more along the lines of what your saying. Ideal, will work and so on....  it was many years a go we had the conversation,   I just remembered the negative context, good to hear your guys experience

if you do go that route...you should probably lap the cases together. My buddy never did, he just rolled the dice and came out ok without any problems.

here's a thread on how to...

I'm pretty sure I remember reading that our member Pmcg lapped his cases too on his current build, maybe he'll chime in as well.
