Why won't my 87 KX250 run when I set the float level to spec's?
« on: September 21, 2014, 11:41:56 AM »
Hi All,

My 87 KX250 won't start if I set the float to spec's...27mm float height.

Everything is stock.

I've always had a issue with starting the bike after it stalls or I shut it off. The plug was always wet leading me to believe a flooding issue.

So I took the carb apart (for the 100th time) and found the float level set to 31-32mm. Then after changing it to spec's, it wouldn't start.

Today, I put new super stock single stage Boyesen reeds, a 42.5 pilot jet (45 is stock) and 320 main jet (350 is stock). Plus I noticed the needle jet clip was in position 1 (leanest position) and spec is second position from the top.

So after changing all this and having the float level at spec, it won't start still, but the plug doesn't look as wet when I pull it out.

After almost packing it in for the night, I put the float height to 31-32mm and it starts without choke and it's 65 deg. outside.

I let her run for about 3-4 minutes. Shut it down, kick it once and she fires up.

Now, I'm not sure if I fixed the problem I have restarting it, but I'm curious why it won't start when I set the float height to spec.

at this point, if you're getting it to fire up after shutting it down for a few minutes...and providing your plug color is good, and there's no surging whilst riding it(because that would suggest a lean condition, possibly from an air leak)...then I'd say happy trails!....
otherwise you could open up another can of unwanted worms that you don't want to deal with.
Excuse me, ma'am...but you've got extremely nice legs!!!...what time do they open???                                                                                                               https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8tCgN3aryQ

does that thing have plastic or brass floats??....sometimes the brass ones can get pin holes from age/corrosion, and take on fuel...which will throw your float height all outa whack!!

I thought of that too. So when I took the brass floats off I looked at them and shook them by my ear to see if I could hear any fuel in them. I really should have submerged them in water to be sure....

I'll see how she runs tomorrow.
