86-88 KX500 Cylinders and valves. Please set me straight.
« on: September 11, 2014, 09:08:21 AM »
Ok, I was asked for some parts ID help.
I have not parted out very many KX500's in this year range so please correct me if I'm wrong.

86 kx500 uses it's own valves.
They are Steel if I'm not mistaken.

87-88 kx500 uses the same exact valves as each other and I believe they are made from aluminum.

If I'm correct, the 86 valves will interchange with the 87-88 valves.

On the cylinders, I'm trying to see the differences.
The one obvious difference I see is the 86 does not have the compression reliefs machined for the kipps ports.
The 87-88 do have the reliefs machined for the kipps ports.
But, how can you visually tell the 87 from the 88?

Anybody know which years had the steel vs. aluminum valves?

Sorry to dredge up an old thread, but I may need to purchase another cylinder for the never-ending project. I currently have an 88 cylinder head to use.  What would I need to do to put the 86 head on my 88 motor using the 88 cylinder head?  Would I just need the 86 head studs, or would I need to buy an 86 cylinder head as well?  Thanks for the help!

I know my 88, which I bought new, had aluminum valves.

I actually installed a set of steel valves from an 86 in my 88 head.  One of my aluminum ones had a small crack in the base.  I'm just wondering if the 86 cylinder itself will bolt to the 88 bottom end, using the 88 cylinder head.

86 cylinder will fit on the 88 cases no problem { 86 cylinder has a extra locating dowel near the kipps valves on the base gasket surface}
88 head will not work unless u countersink the head stud holes { not sure how well that will work out}
Your 88 head might have bigger squich band to 88mm  bore

Check your cylinder for wear 5mm down bore on Exhaust Side /where rings stop at TDC/  Check with fingernail
