kx500 and cr500
« on: May 04, 2014, 05:06:09 PM »
well i own a 91 kx 500 and i let my buddy ride it the other day. he said that the cr was a better bike that it had way more bottom end power and about the same top. iv never ridden a cr but i dont think that it would be that much better if at all.
so i thought that i would post on here to see what your guys have to say sence i dont see myself being able to ride a cr anytime soon

I love Green vs. Red threads

Seat of the pants claims such as "It feels faster" can be really misleading.
Case and point, my Brother was helping out program a traction control device for a Pro rider.
They worked on the bike for two days dialing it in.
He improved the riders lap times from 1:41 to 1:39.
But the pro rider was upset because his lap times for the same track and the same bike were 3/4 of a second faster the previous year.
He said that the traction control was preventing him from getting good drive out of the corners.
So, they looked carefully at the data.
My brother told him that he was already spinning up the back tire out of the corners and that if he dialed back the intervention any more he would slow down because he would be spinning more.
With the mapping my bro made he was running higher top speeds down the straights then ever before so why the slower lap times?
So they overlaid this years data with last years data and discovered that last year the rider was braking later into the corners then this year.
But the rider wasn't accepting the raw data because of how the bike felt.
So the morning of the race the head mechanic uploaded the same mapping that they won with the previous year at that track at the insistence of the rider.
He ran 1:41's for every lap and took third.
After the race the Pro rider called my bro and apologized for not running the maps he made and asked him if he would be willing to go to their next race and customize the maps again.
True story that happened very recently.... I just can't mention who it was for.

So, is it possible your buddy is right?
Sure, there are many things that could cause this to happen.
But to have a fair comparison both bikes would have to be compared side by side to eliminate the "Feel" factor.
You drag race his bike and he drag races your bike.
Who wins?
Then switch bikes and race again.
Who wins?
If the same bike wins then you eliminate feel and know which is faster...

Now, if his red bike is faster then your green bike something is amiss.
If both bikes are stock and both bikes are in equal condition then your green bike is gonna win.
If his bike has been modified and yours is not then there is the difference.
If his bike is in a better state of tune then that's the difference.

It's all in the details...

As was said, 'felt' is not always accurate. I built a big block '69 El Camino with a Holly carb. Tuned it street and strip until it was excellent. Had that good mechanical Holly feel. Put tuned port fuel injection on it with the adjustments box inside the car. Tuned it and headed to the track. 'Felt' slower. Got the slip and the times were identical. Power delivery was smoother. Milage went up too! I would have bet it was not as fast.
There are many factors that can effect the feel. Were both bikes stock? Just a pipe change can make a HUGE difference where a bike makes power. Without 'scientific' study you can't trust the data.

well he owned 2 cr500 i think they were both stock. my kx has a fmf woods gnarly. so i would think that my bike would have more pull in the low rpms but he says that its not even close. he says the cr didit even have the hit from the powerband that the power never changed from idle to redline. is this tru? i really need to find a cr to ride :-P

Maybe your kx is running well below it potential ,/worn piston ring/ bad jetting/ bad crank seals  etc
The kx should have loads more bottom end    / longer stroke/ KIPPS/ plated bore
the cr {TOP END} is dinosaur of a engine design compared to the kx,  Its basiclly a  early 80s motor

I have owned several CR500's of different years and all of them had a hit for the power band which reminds me of a cr250 but with more torque and not quite as fast of a hit.
I believe that until you ride a good running CR500 and a good running KX500 you simply won't know.

Here is what I can tell you;
I have owned three KX500's. The current one is a 2000 and is all stock. The engine is in excellent condition. The other two were older, the first air cooled, the second was the first year water cooled. I have owned more then 80 motorcycles. This bike is the only one I have been actually scared of. Not saying 'scared me', have had bike's that did that, I mean 'scared of'.  :-o Riding it more is the cure for that.
The pull off the bottom is unreal. 'Think' throttle and the front end is coming up. I can not imagine anything pulling harder other than a pure drag bike. Traction has been the biggest issue with it. CR500's and KX500's are both badass.

Those aren't 91 forks.
Did you upgrade them?

Why you say that.  They look like my original 91 forks did.
