Jackson Pratt Drain system

I've gotten some pretty horrified looks from people and kids while walking around with these things exposed.

I'll post a pic of the staples/incision when I change the dressing again...still QUITE painful to move around!!

the main problem was that the muscle down the center of my abdomen had split and pulled itself out to either side of my obliques  a little over a year ago.
The triangle represents what happened to the muscle...meaning there was no muscle where the triangle is, it was all forced to the sides.
More than likely, I'm not gonna have a belly button after it heals...but that's no biggie.
Oh...and oxycodone is wonderful mixed with frozen mudslides :-D

I did have a small re-occurring hernia just above my belly button that happened the 1st week of January this year...and the doctor said he could fix the immediate area in day-surgery, but because of the muscle being split, I'd have a 90% chance of it re-occurring again, and so on and so on...he said it would be like climbing a ladder, it would just keep happening.
So he suggested going this route....and now I'll only have a 5% chance of it happening again.
He laid a 6" x 8" piece of mesh in there for good adherence.

My Dad says his mesh itches sometimes but his is way smaller then yours..
I hope that your does better.

Here's a good article on it for those wondering what the mesh is..

funny, my dad says the same thing too about the mesh being itchy...he had an umbilical hernia for just about 40 years that never hurt or bothered him, but it stuck out about 5 inches by the time he had it fixed last year, and he had a big piece laid in too....so I guess it's likely mine will too...guess I'll just have to look like a baboon scratching and slappin my gut from time to time :?

alright, IMGs it is...

there's 45 staples holding it together....I go in Tuesday to get the drains removed, not sure if he'll pull the staples then too.

the foxx is now magnetic for a couple of days..  ... staples would stay in between 7 - 14 days, because of individual healing...  i still know this from my injuries a few years ago, as they fixed my broken wrist and ankle and at least my nose surgery last november..

if they're minor injuries, yes...but my last hernia last August they kept the staples in for 4 weeks....the ones in my shoulder were in for 20 days, the ones in my knee where in for 24 days...it all depends on the severity of the injury/incision...all of mine have been deep, so they get kept in longer to be sure there's no chance of them re-opening.
different surgeries call for different recovery times....unfortunately, 90% of my injuries have required 4-5+ week long heal times.
