2004/2005 differences
« on: February 26, 2014, 06:26:09 PM »
Just wondering if anyone knows if the coils on a 2004 and 2005 are the same size.
As the coil on my 2004 doesn't seem to want to fit into my new frame.

On a 250 they are the same.
On a 125 they are the same.
But, the 125 and 250 coils are different from each other..
The four stroke engine: That's one stroke for producing power and three for wearing the engine out.

d**n!! So now I need to work out what I have!! I've definately got a 2004 engine and the frame number matches 04 as well. Just the coil is almost twice the size of the mounting brackets.

Ok.. So I've double checked the frame number and it looks like its an 03 frame. But has at least 2004 swinging arm as it has the uni trak system.

So, is the 2003 frame the same as 2004, is it ok to run 2004 swinging arm etc? Is there anyway of checking that the swinging arm is actually 2004?

03 and 04 frames are different. The linkage changed from 03 to 04 and the 04 swing arm will not work with the 03 frame. Although the 03 and 04 are similar there are many changes between the 2 years.
If you post a pic we can tell what you have.

Right, i've found on ebay tonight, 2 different coils.  Ones 55mm and the other 80mm.  Are these technically the same just different sized or is a certain size or a certain engine?

Here are the pics of the frame I took the other night.

Just thought i'd update a few pics of the build!

And here is my latest problem!!!

Are the air box boots different from 2004 to 2005?  As mine has fallen a few centre metres short!  Or is there a difference in sub frame  :?

There is a difference between 03,04 and 05. The 04 airbox boot is longer than either the 03 and 05-07. I currently have a 03, 04, 05 and a 07 in my garage. The airboxs are different also. You need a 04 box and boot to get it to fit. Im not sure if the 04 boot will fit the 05-07 airbox.

Ohhh man! So the airbox and boot are different!?!?!

Can't believe this.. He sold it me as a full rolling chassis.  Anyone know where I can get a complete airbox and boot? Or want to swap for mine... Which must be 2005 onwards I guess?!?

Please tell me the subframes are the same...

Your bike is an 04 so you need a 04 airbox and boot. The KX250 was changed extensively in 05. Narrower frame, completely new engine etc. You can probably mix and match parts from different years but nothing is guaranteed to work. There may be alot of trial and error involved.

Man... It seems the 04 was a real odd bike. Nothing seems to be compatible with much else!!

If anyone sees one up for grabs let me know... They're about £180 here in the UK. Plus I need a fuel tap thrnnit can all go together!

I've just stripped the air box and the only Number I can find on air boot is 0003. Does this identify the part that I have? Anyone have an 04 and can tell me what number is on theirs?
