Need Discontinued Fork Cartridge Holder
« on: January 17, 2014, 08:31:32 AM »
I'm trying to change my fork seals on my newly acquired 89 kx250 and the cartridge holder tool I need is discontinued. Anyone have one they want to sell or other ideas to get the bottom valve of to remove the fork tubes. I have the 14mm hex wrench but the valve just keeps turning and doesn't loosen.

Pretty simple build out of a piece of iron pipe. Look at the pics of one and cut pipe to match. You can most likely use an impact, pull hard on the tube and it will shake it loose. I rarely use my tool for removal, just assembly. One removed then the tool is super easy to build

I've never bought a special tool for forks. I just use an impact. Never had an issue. You could take your forks in to the dealer too. They should have the tool on a dusty shelf somewhere. They may even let you barrow it.
It's hard to keep a drivers license riding a 2 stroke dirt bike on the street.  If you drive within the law they are VERY boring.

Lined up an impact driver for this weekend so hopefully I can rebuild my forks and stop the waterfall of fork oil out of my seals

OK laugh if you will, but I have used a broom handle, just the friction will stop it from spinning. I also use an impact to remove it

The 89 US model forks have a different cartridge.  It looks more like a reverse hex fitting.  The newer style notched cartridge holders won't help on these forks.

Did you buy it yet?

Not yet- I put an order in through Ray Meyers for the OEM tool.. expecting them to refund and say NLA like several other sites.  Hoping they still happen to have one.  If not I'll try the FRP one... unless you have an alternate suggestion that doesn't involve welding one myself (no welder).

Just as I thought, Ron Ayers allows you to purchase discontinued items..  at least a refund is being made..

Part number 57001-1245 is discontinued and has been refunded back to your cardor PayPal . I do not see any recommended service replacement listed for this item . We regret any inconvenience that this may have caused. Thank You, Customer Service www.ronayers.com 1.800.888.3084

Looks like the only other pre-made option is the FRP tool, assuming it's still available.

I got my FRP cartridge holder in last week.  Haven't had time to continue disassembly but will post back when I do.
