Will 99 Cdi work on 89 motor?
« on: November 05, 2013, 09:51:01 AM »
I bought an 89 motor to replace the one in my 99. Didn't come with a Cdi and I have my old Cdi. Will it work? Has the white/ green wire that is different, but didn't know if it was maybe just a ground.

My stator is toast so I can't just change it all out. Also, if it will not work, will one from an 88 (on my 89)work?

the 86-89 cdi´s will all work with the 89-stator.
but why you dont use your complete 99 ignition system?  the only big difference between the engines is the heavier crank-weight that came in 92 that gives more torque ..

´83 kx250, ´87 kx250 (with 360 big bore), 87 kx500, ´93 kx500 sfc

Motopunt I am still trying to figure out how the 92on had a heavier crank weight without modifing the cases, Any pictures of the heavier crank?

I think he is referring to the early years hole in the crank webs, vs the newer solid ones.

My stator on my 99 is toast. Crank bearing went out and vibrated out the stator mounting screws, ruining it. I have tried to find one ( stator alone) in the states but no luck so far.

I don't really want to upgrade to the $500+ one ,but may be a wise choice?

May buy an 88 Cdi and throw it in, as its all i need to make it run. The manual I have is showing 88 different from 89. Is this correct?

has the 89 got big or small flwheel?
on the manual it looks like 89 W/G white/green is the same as B/Y black yellow 90on

yes... :-)
and its only the crank weight. cases are the same ´89-2004 ..there are a few ways to change crank weight without modifying to the cases..   the added crank weight is caused on the fact that the big kx was used more for offroad then motocross since the early 90´s.

here is a hrc honda rc500 works-crank that was used in worlchampionchip

Ya,thanks,  I been browsing ebay about 2 months now. And is why asking about the 88, if it will work in the 89 motor.

I either need an 89 Cdi OR a 92 and up stator to use with my flywheel and Cdi that I have. My bike/old motor is a 99. I replaced it with an 89 I bought, however it didn't come with a CDI.

I wouldn't mind upgrading, but this thing is putting me in the poorhouse already, and have only ridden it about an hour.

Have u got a clymer manual? It has wiring diagrams of the cdi stator wiring
The pre 89 flywheel/stator is alot smaller diameter than 89on

if you look good into all the offers, you can assemble a complete 88 ignition system for roundabout 50,- dollar + shipping.. thats the thing, that i would prefer. so you have your bike running and could look in the future for an newer statorplate, that fits to your 99 ignition system
