Fuel Tank
« on: September 16, 2013, 12:20:20 PM »
Hi,

I'm looking to get a new OEM fuel tank for my 03 500 and it appears that it's no longer available.  Looks like I found a NOS tank for a 04 that appears to have the same part number.  If they are the same, why would the 03 be listed as unavailable?  I thought that they were a direct swap?

Thanks

The four stroke engine: That's one stroke for producing power and three for wearing the engine out.

kx500 2003 and 2oo4 are exactly identical bikes... only diference are the diferent labels on the tank and scrouds . there is the reason for the diferent oem-numbers...  8-)

Thanks for confirming.  I also ordered a new set of decals too.  Hopefully they will last a little while with the new tank.  My local sign shop said they have a chemical resistance clear spray that they use on their vinyl lettering.  Maybe that will buy some time too.

I received my new tank and I didn't realize that the decals come with the tank. Even though I have an 03 and the decals are for an 04, I think I will keep them on. They will definitely last longer as each side consists of two small decals, one on top and one on the bottom. My old ones only bubbled in the middle.

They have discontinued the 03 tank, but as you already know the 03 and 04 are the same. Not sure why they discontinued the 03 part number when it's the same tank and the decals are still available.

 Non intellectual donkey  ... lift your eyes up to my former post here and there you can read why it is, like it is with the tanks!!!

i had much to learn about the kx-partnumbers in the last 15 years .  so i can say, that the kx 500 tanks are all the same part from 88-2004 . its only the colour and the decals that changed every year . and thats the reason for different numbers for the same part. sometimes it needs a second look...

wish you much riding fun with your new tank...  8-)
