throttle cable/ idle problem?????
« on: June 14, 2013, 02:48:39 AM »
I did some hose replacements on my son's KX125
and now am having idle issues............. I knoe it says
in the manual to move the bars from side to side and
if idle changes the cable is faulty or routed wrong, does
anyone have a pic or drawing looking down into the
frame cavity showing the cable routing???? I didnt
think I moved it but am figuring that is my problem now.
Thanks in advance for any help sent my way.

Hey,

What year is your KX125?  I would first lube your cable, then detach it from the throttle housing and route it in a way that it has smooth radius bends and is not hooking.  Be sure to do a through inspection of the cable to make sure it is not damaged (chafed or squat), its not fun having the throttle stuck wide open.

This is an image of a KX125 I found kicking around the net, but usually they route through this retainer up the left fork cylinder and to the throttle housing.  Some people tie the cable down tight to the handle bars instead of leaving the cable housing a nice large loop for enough play.

it may sound silly...but having the cable routed on the wrong side of the front number plate bolt can cause this....this becomes even more of an issue if you have installed taller bars in the past.....it should be routed on the RIGHT hand side of the front number plate bolt....so if you're sitting on the bike, the cable should go down under the plate bolt from the right hand side, not over it then down.
Might be worth checking.

It is a 2003 KX125, I just changed the bars this evening. checked for free movement and will replace when the new cable gets here. We just got this 10 year old bike and have been replacing hoses and checking everything and do have some weathering issues. Like I say am gonna replace the throttle cable for peace of mind, have it running fine now but it is in the back of my mind for sure. Bar change was just because he wanted these Protaper bars.
