1986 kips power vales

Rebuilt the bottom end of my kx 500 today and starte to mic and look at the top end. Never done power vales before but the clymer manual says one power valve has a mark on the drum shaft. I have two identical looking power vales and do not see a mark (I see the aligment dots) on the shaft of the drum??? Do I have a wrong power valve? is the mark easily seen???

if the valves are worn the marks on the valves could be worn

Here are mine. Do they look like a left and a right?


From ur pic it looks like one shaft is round and one is the shape of a triangle! Need to get this solved since I'm at this point In the build

The valve in my picture are alloy, that why the shaft is thicker,
The alloy valves wear off valve gear
The  timing mark is the shorter spline on gear

U are lucky you valves are steel
Both valve are the same so when fitted one valve will look wrong {the flywheel side valve will look upsidedown going to the kipps chamber but both valve should line up perfect with the exhaust subports on the opened position

There is no left or right valve, they are the same. Both valves share the same part number.
There are several different versions of the oem valves available.I have 3 different versions of the 86-88 valve.
On the aluminium set the timing mark is the gear with the small tooth.
On the steel set the timing mark is the dot stamped onto the gear.
Both of these forms of timing marks can be hidden quite easily by carbon.
Line up the dot , or short gear tooth with its corresponding marks on the operating rod.
Its pretty obvious when you get the timing right. Check inside the exhaust port and look at the valves.
There are only so many ways they can go in and when its right it's obvious.
