What is it worth? 99' KX 250
« on: March 30, 2013, 08:04:39 AM »
I started another post yesterday about my bike. It does run really strong, has around 135PSI. Although it will need a new piston kit/ re-plate/ possible lower bearings sooner than later. Front tire is 80% plus left. Rear has 25% life or so left. It will have a stock pipe instead of the gnarly though. New clutch. What do you think is reasonable for it?

This pic is a little older, actually looks cleaner now.

This can be a tough question to answer...since everyone has their own perspective of what "their" bike is worth...and then you throw in the fact that it needs motor work....which is good that you're being honest about that.

If I was going to buy it,knowing it needs top-end work...I would just completely tear the whole motor down and replace EVERYTHING...better to do it all at once so you know what you've got.Complete motor rebuild would cost roughly $1k depending how much your Kawie dealer gives you for a discount.
Providing the suspension is in good working order(nothing blown/leaking),swing arm/linkage bearings are'nt noticeably shot....frame is'nt bent/cracked...and it's ALL there...I don't see why you could'nt get a $1,000 for it.

This is just my opinion...some guys might not give you $600-$700 for it.
Excuse me, ma'am...but you've got extremely nice legs!!!...what time do they open???                                                                                                               https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8tCgN3aryQ

Thanks F4B.....That's about what I was thinking. I think I'll throw it in the classifieds for $950 and see what happens.  :-)

This might help give a little perspective too...I'm still in the process of rebuilding this,I've found alot of parts are missing now that I've gotten closer to the end...but you can get the idea of what I meant by yours being ALL there...and that a $1k is reasonable for yours.

Here's another way of looking at it.
What will a bank loan on one that actually runs?
Usually they turn to KBB or NADA.
Currently KBB has the Trade in Value at 855.
That is what a dealer will typically pay you for a running 99 kx250 with no mechanical problems.
Full dealer retail is 1350.
Usually a private seller will get somewhere in between retail and trade in.
Now you might say yeah but I see them all the time on Craigslist for 2K.
True, but they aren't selling for that.
I check every listing in our state several times a day and the bikes that are of that vintage being offered for 2K sit week after week, month after month.
So is 1000 to much to ask?
Not necessarily but I say be prepared to haggle with the low ballers like me
I would offer 855 for one that runs and is in decent condition.
The more damage it has the less I would offer to a point.
Nobody would sell one that needed a new top and bottom end for 400 would they?
Most of the time no, but once in a great while they will.
Another thing in your favor is the time of the year.
This is the perfect time to sell.
My guess is that if you are willing to sell it between 600-700 it would go fairly quickly.
Anything more is pushing it unless the bike has a lot of aftermarket goodies and is very clean.
So, whatever you sell it for, let us know.
