Here's another way of looking at it.
What will a bank loan on one that actually runs?
Usually they turn to KBB or NADA.
Currently KBB has the Trade in Value at 855.
That is what a dealer will typically pay you for a running 99 kx250 with no mechanical problems.
Full dealer retail is 1350.
Usually a private seller will get somewhere in between retail and trade in.
Now you might say yeah but I see them all the time on Craigslist for 2K.
True, but they aren't selling for that.
I check every listing in our state several times a day and the bikes that are of that vintage being offered for 2K sit week after week, month after month.
So is 1000 to much to ask?
Not necessarily but I say be prepared to haggle with the low ballers like me
I would offer 855 for one that runs and is in decent condition.
The more damage it has the less I would offer to a point.
Nobody would sell one that needed a new top and bottom end for 400 would they?
Most of the time no, but once in a great while they will.
Another thing in your favor is the time of the year.
This is the perfect time to sell.
My guess is that if you are willing to sell it between 600-700 it would go fairly quickly.
Anything more is pushing it unless the bike has a lot of aftermarket goodies and is very clean.
So, whatever you sell it for, let us know.
