KX500 with Yamaha suspension?
« on: October 15, 2012, 03:11:20 AM »
I have a 1992 KX500 and was thinking about upgrading the suspension components.

I weigh about 215 without gear, 6? 1? tall, and I will ride the bike in vet mx/vintage mx.

I was thinking about using someone like Factory Connection for heavier springs and/or suspension revalving, but then a friend of mine suggested possibly trying to put newer modern forks (or a new modern complete front end) on the KX500.  I have access to a friend's blown up 2003 Yamaha YZ450F that might be a good starting point.

Has anyone done this before?

Thanks.

My uncle has a 92 kx500 with ?hlins forks of a yz. There some pics here on the site of it, Red Bull Knock out could be a search link.
It works super, better then the stock forks. For mx it's perfect, for dessert you need a steering damper.
At 80mph or so it wil head shake to much.

DO IT . Let us know how well it works for you, & what you had to do. I "think" the dogbone will help that set-up even more.

X2 on the steering stabilizer,  tightening up the rake really makes them rattle the bars at speed. I need one before I eat it. Really small repetative bumps is where you'll notice it most, like wash boards
if I only had a pair, I could actually ride this thing

& to the people I like  FYYFF

If you could figure out a way to use '06+ Yamaha Kayaba  SSS  "speed sensitive" forks on the K5, that would be a HUGE upgrade in plushness. Both my previous '07 YZ450F, and my current '08 YZ125 have these forks, and let me tell ya' they are AMAZING !  I believe the '06+ SSS forks are 48mm
