Updating the fork protectors on an older KX
« on: September 18, 2004, 06:52:13 AM »
:?: I'm trying to update the fork tube (lower) protectors on a '92.  The newer wrap around type look better and should offer more side protection.  I'm not too worried about the missing 3rd bottom mount.  I just bought a UFO kit complete with the guides but as I was driving home I remembered that the '92 has smaller forks than the new ones. Sure enough, the clamps are a bit too big.  Before I modify them, does anyone have an easy mod to fix this or a better way to do this whole upgrade thing. Thanks. Cam.

No, I think youll be the first. But I wonder about using guards that wrap around off a differnt brand bike that use the same fork size?

I snapped my fork guards off late ast year in a nasty "almost crash" (cased a landing bad but didn't wreck).  This past spring I replaced them with UFO protectors for a 1995 KX125.  The two front bolts on the fork protector attach in the same place.  The side holes do nothing so I hack-sawed them off and sanded'em smooth.  Works like a charm and protects way better than the stock ones.  btw, my K5 is 1993 so I think the 1995 KX125 UFO's should work on yours too.

edit:  Heres a pic of the Acerbis one (should work too, but more expensive than UFO).  See the side mount?  Thats what I cut off and smoothed over.

Thanks Nick.  I checked the UFO part number #02770047 and it covers the 125/250/500 from 94-95.  I will order some this weekend. Thanks for the info. Cam.

Do the 92's use a different sized slide?  I have a 94 and a pair of 93 slides and the only thing I noticed was the different caliper mount and plastic guard mount.

R-Y,
I just tried them on last nite.  I got the UFO #KA02770041 (can't read my shop notes the 1 may be a 7) for 94-95 125-250.  Fits like a charm other than the third hole which most people just trim off.  I have some 1/8 x 1/2 aluminum strips, so I am planning to build some L bracket supports to attach between the guard and the 2 holes and give some support for the third hole.  Will post a pic if I do it.  This is absolutly not required, they are very secure with 2 holes but I like making stuff. Also just thinking about it when I do the disc guard side my whole bracket idea might go out the window.  As for the slides, they are all the same until 1996 when they get bigger. Cam.

I used the stock front brake rotor protecter and had to trim it a bit too.  If you looked hard, you would notice, but most people don't.

Nick,
Thanks for the info.  I got mine to fit perfectly!  I used the UFO #KA02770041 for 94-95 125-250 (white).  I have the stock '92 disc guard so I trimmed the third hole off of that side to overlap it. For the throttle side I built an L bracket from a 1/8 x 1/2 aluminum strips that goes between the guard and the 2 main holes and supports the third hole (used a rivet here).  As for the slides my '92 forks measure 2.41" OD (where the clamp goes) and 2.33" in the groove.  This was a worthwhile upgrade. Cam.
