2000 KX 250 compatible Rear wheel
« on: April 09, 2012, 07:14:40 AM »
Well, after getting some spokes and taking my bike on down to my bro's to start taking off the wheel to put them on, I found that there was a good size crack on both sides of the rim right in between the two missing spokes. Hmmm I wonder which cause which? Wonder if the spokes being broken cause the crack, or if the crack caused the spokes to come loose. Anyway, so I'm trying to hunt down a rear Wheel that I can use without modding anything. From what I gather, the rear wheels from KX 125/250 99-02 will work. Are these the only ones I can can use without altering spacers etc.....? I know one is an 18" and the stock one on my Bike is a 19". If I were to use the smaller 125 Wheel, would I notice any difference?  New to this forum, and I'm glad I found it. Love my KX!

The wheels are essentially the same from about 89, main difference was the older wheels only had one bearing on the drive side, I think it was about 95-97 they changed to two bearings. the 125 rim is 1.85" where as the 250 rim is 2.15, will you notice a difference, probably. putting a 110 tire on the smaller rim will give you a rounder footprint and in some conditions less traction. we use wideer rims for more traction.

Why don't you get a new rim and relace it, then you know what you have, buying a used wheel may be somebody elses problem and may not be in any better shape than what you have.

Thanks. Well the thing is, I do not have unlimited resources to buy all brand new stuff. Wish I did. I see some of them rims are hundreds of dollars. So yes Price is an issue. So I am looking all over the place for a good used wheel, but to find the exact one for my 2000 KX 250 proved harder than expected, so I started noticing that certain other bikes used similar wheels, such as the 500 and the 125. So yeah I hear what you are saying about the smaller rim. I'd like to stay with the bigger one. I have found several around the web and some are in good shape as far as having no cracks and tight spokes and such as well as having relatively new tires on them as well as sprockets and hubs that look to be still in great shape also. I have all that stuff on my rim as well for spares. I'm sure this is a minor problem for some of you guys that do all your own work, but the fact is I'm not that mechanically inclined, but I love to ride, which means most times, I have to have my bike worked on in the shop, or maybe have my bro take care of things for me since he is pretty good with bikes. Wish I did know how to work on my own stuff. It can be an expensive hobby always having to have somebody else work on my bike.  :|

I just spotted a fairly good candidate. My question is this though. This wheel I've spotted is off of a 2001 KX125 which means the Hubs will match, however it is a 1.85 Rim and my old one is a 2.15. Will I notice any difference when riding? If so what am I likely to notice? Also, would  be able to take my old tire off of my cracked 2.15 and mount it on this new rim if necessary?
